The HEARO 999 headamp was voiced for driving AKG pro headphones. The HEARO 999 first and foremost is a pro rig. It sounds very good with the K601, which has the classic AKG pro headphone sound. It doesn't sound nearly as good with Beyerdynamic DT880 cans. They sort of turn into bass monsters.
SO.....if you have pro AKG cans and want a good headamp for them, the HEARO 999 is a top choice.
If you have something with a vastly different sound than AKG pro, then maybe not a good headamp for those cans.
K601 driven by the 999 and the wireless cans sound almost exactly the same. That is what a recording or location sound enginer would want. What an audiophile would want is secondary....and I believe AKG came out with the K501 and K701 to address audiophile tastes in music. The K601 has the classic AKG pro can sound.
