just test them today. I feel that they are more suitable for portable sources. Quite easy to drive. The SQ wise, clarity and details were decent for its price. The thing that surprised me is that the bass. I have tried a few akgs of the same level (271, 242hd, 240m, 172), almost all of them hardly have good bass. But the 142hd had a good kick in the bass. The overall sound was "rich" rather then "smooth". I tested it side by side with the 242hd and the result is that, 242 is "smooth" and 142 is "strong". 
 
But the matter of fact, I  would not compare this to any headphones which are 1 level higher. Even if i were to compare it to a denon d1100, it loses out almost everything other then the vocal performance. Its a good replacement for an ES7 anyway.
