I think my interest in the Encores is waning.

I think it's your brain ;)

Don't know, this is one of those never ending debates on Head Fi (and other audio venues).
All I know is, if I decide after a week of burning in that they sound great and I'm loving them, I don't care if it's my brain!!! :D

to me the Encore were "bright" compared to the EM32, now it's "normal"

Mine don't sound "bright" at all, rolled off highs, mushy mids, boomy bass, have a pair of $120 ear buds (the Zen, which I'm to review one of these days, very nice btw imo), much more enjoyable/detailed/controlled than my out of the box Encores, at about a tenth of the cost. Something is wrong with this picture...

+1. This is what I hear too. Talking to ACS now, this should not be the case...

Mine sound incredible. Best listening experience I've eve had. Incredible bass , beautiful mids, treble and soundstage. I have reached audio nirvana

I thought you liked them?

I actually have two pairs of Encores, due to a mixup in my order. When I got my first pair I noted that they had a snug fit, and generally have a warm, analogue sound with a spacious soundstage and good timbre. This was meant more to be a description of its sonic properties, specifically explaining why I thought they sounded closer to the JHA Layla than Angie, as opposed to a stamp of approval :D

I've since been doing all my listening on my later pair, though, and there are reasons for me to suspect something is simply off- it definitely sounds different from my first pair. Not sure what's going on here, which pair is right (if either), so I'll get things sorted out with ACS and then we'll see. No big deal, things happen... :)

I just landed in Helsinki and it was the most pleasurable transatlantic flight I have ever taken. The Encores combined with the ZX2 is the highest level of portable sound I have experienced. Mindblowing! And I should mention the comfort, way beyond any acrylic CIEM I have owned. Yes, I'm in love.

Quite the contrast with impressions lately. It goes from dark, muddy beat by cheap earbuds to amazing, bright, and extraordinary.

Is it possible that its a bad fit or just a defect that their QA didn't catch before shipping out? I'm still interested but will wait until the issues get sorted.

Also, if anyone has compared these to the Velvets, I'd be interested to read about it. Thanks.

Or there is a chance that to some Encore sounds good and to some sounds bad and this is assesed purely on sound sig preferences and not on the basis of technical performance.

Except for the fact that jelt2359 had two pair that sounded completely different.
