Thanks for the help

No problem. What Ray probably meant was that there's a good range of tubes you can use w/ different gain levels. IIRC, the 12BH7, which can also be used in the Raptor has a higher gain than the 12AU7s.

On paper, the data sheets show the 12BH7A has an amplification factor of 16.5 vs an amplification factor of 19.5 for a 12AU7. But, in an actual circuit that difference is so small there is virtually no difference.

I stand corrected. I might have mistaken the higher heater current of the 12BH7 as an indication of higher gain.

Waiting for Tubes is tough! I know your fustration. When I have them comming I check my mail everyday and sometimes twice a day. Mail man comes at about 4pm and sometimes I get impatient and go to the box at 2 or 3 pm anyway "JUST IN CASE"!!!

Got a pair of Amperex 7119 yesterday. I liked it a little bit better than the TS 5687s, there seems to be a bit more definition in the highs and this lets the character of the gain tube come into play more than before.

I initially went to vacuumtubesinc to buy the remaining pair of GB 5687s but he only had one tube left so I had to go with these. I didn't want to come home empty handed

Glad to hear that you like the 7119. It should sound better than the TS5687 as TS has been rated harsh for some listeners. Amperex tubes are indeed providing much hi-def than others. Same goes with Amperex ECC82 that have better definition that others. I am waiting for my 7119 to arrive and meanwhile shopping for some spares and also looking at 6900s.

I exchanged some e-mails with a person on Ebay who is selling the 6900 tubes. According to him they are very solid state and dry sounding. Just made me wonder why people pay so much for them after the way he described them.

I have never used the 6900 but those, whose ears I trust, often describe them as slightly glassy sounding and not as musical as other types. But it impresses as it was designed for missiles and has the cool ceramic spacers, thick glass and overbuilt design. Oh some Bendix tubes I like but I don't think I would spring for the 6900 but who knows.
