A list of quadraphonic headphones, and the best ones.

Quadraphonic headphones are a personal way of listning to Quad recorded LPs otherwise known as SQ.
First things first, there is no point using Quad phones on a 2ch stereo or even a surround sound amp, because you need two phone jacks on the unit its self, Iv never seen a this day in age amp that has two jacks.
Quadraphonic amps where first built in 1973 and phased out in 1978 because of the different quad recordings from different companys competing against each other and only some systems could read the recordings from other companys recorded structure.
It became too confusing for the consumer to figure out what lp would play best on which system.
The other thing was that todays 5.1 or 7.1 surrond systems have built in decoders to decyfer the right frequency for each channel.
Quadraphonic amps (4ch) from the 70s also needed an SQ decoder/demodulator to decyfer the four different frequencies needed to get the right Quadraphonic effect.
So what we needed back then was -

1. A Quadraphonic Amp (4ch)
2. An SQ decoder/modulater (If one wasn't built in, some wer'nt)
3. 4 Speakers
4. A quadraphonic diamond Shibata stylus/cartrage
5. And ofcause a quaudraphonic SQ or QS recorded LP

Anyway, in order to get Quadsound from Quad phones you need a Quad amp with 2 phone jacks, one plugs into the top jack for front L-R and the other plugs into the bottom jack for rear L-R.
The Quad phones have 2 speakers in each ear, one at the top and one at the bottom.
I know the question is...hey we only have two ears??
Well its all about effect and frequency.
When listning to Quad recordings with the right setup you hear top to bottom in each ear seperatly and its sounds incredible!
So thats how it works, its all about frequecy separation/4
I know this because iv just invested in all the gear thats needed to play Quadraphonic in my own living room, and believe me it was pretty hard finding all that vintage gear and have it working right, probably would have been easier to just buy a 5.1 system.......NAAA!!!!! Quad rocks!!!!
Anyway if you had 7.1 surround, would'nt you need 7 & a half ears??? lol

Hope all this makes sence
Cheers and enjoy Quad headphones if your lucky enough to have some, remember to use them with the right gear!

I've seen Beyerdynamic DT204s in the wilds of Ebay. They have *two* 1/4" jacks for 4-channels of surround. In build, they look very similar to the DT480s that I've been enjoying. Certainly, they are of the same epoch.

Are there decent modern headphones that are actually four-channel quadraphonic (not stereo) that would also work with 4.x sound files (including those directly imported from actual four channel quadraphonic recordings from the 1970s *) and/or or 5.x sound files, played out through a 5.1 audio or 7.1 audio card from a computer (like the M-Audio "Revolution 7.1" for Power Macintosh MDD G4 towers under Mac OS 9.2.2 and OS X **, and similar cards for Intel CPU machines under Windows ***), or from an actual multi-channel DVD-A player?

Or is it simply better to go with multiple speakers, than trying headphones?

- Jazz2Blues

* i.e. the 1970 - 1978 U.S. audio releases on Q4 / Quadraphonic Reel To Reel Tape with discrete full bandwidth, and on Quad-8 (Q8) / Quadraphonic 8-Track Tape with discrete full bandwidth...

** M-Audio "Revolution 7.1" 8-channel 192 kHz/24-bit PCI audio card, providing audio output support for up to a 7.1 external sound configuration.

*** like a Realtek supported 2/4/5.1/7.1-channel audio out on a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-USB3P motherboard under Windows 7

I just got a pair of Quadraphonics. They are some old VPi headphones that I picked up for 4 bucks at a thrift store. Once ghetto rigged through my FiiO E7, I found that only 2/4 channels worked. One in each ear. But the sound surprisingly good for some 25+ year old cans, especially when EQ'd.

Just ebayed a pair of koss k6-lcq. Hmmm what about driving these from the front/rear speaker ports on my receiver? On really low volume not to blow the headphones. Maybe put a resistor in to keep voltage and such down?

Just on there off-chance anyone is still into quads and watching this thread, I thought I'd mention that I've just seen a pair of Unisound MS-422s on ebay (item 252331520619). Far too much effort for me, but might interest someone.

I have a Marantz receiver (the 4270) that has quadraphonic capabilities, including creating quadraphonic effects from a stereo signal.  I has a pair of outputs for quadraphonic phones on the front panel.  I've never used them because I've never owned quadraphonic cans.  Now, I'll be searching for a pair.
