A Concise View of Why The ATH-M50 is No Longer King

I find that the thing that determines the midrange of a headphone is the amp that is powering the headphone more so than the headphone itself.

Usually recessed mids can be attributed to a headphone being inadequately amp'ed. It may still go fairly loud, but the mids sound somewhat withdrawn.

Sound Quest you are right.  The amp/dac brought the mids forward which I really like.  Also the sound stage is a bit wider too.  If I have to nick pic I wish the higher frequencies were a bit crisper.  But I am really happy with the combination.

I tried the M50 at a fair, and IMHO I find the Hd201 alot more entertaining and interesting.... But that's just me. Anyone know who's the new "king" then? Superlux I'm guessing?

Here's a good price for the HD681 EVO:

I have the original HD681 and like it.  But, as others have mentioned, the treble is a bit excessive.

ATH-A900X can be bought on Amazon for 180 dollars which is in the budget territory and these headphones just smoke its smaller brother M50 and other budget headphones mentioned except maybe modded T50RP but its price is higher.

I don't disagree there's probably better out there now for the price but dang it makes me sad to see M50 (that brought me here) not getting more love lol

Bought them about 15 months ago, and still credit them for really getting me to want more and more from my music. I had the hd 555s too which i enjoyed but to me, i thought the m50 was all around better except for maybe soundstage.

I guess you're not a huge fan of Ultrasone if you think M50s are too sibilant.

Haven't had a chance to try an Ultrasone before, but probably won't like it based on your description.

My HFI-780s were a bit on the sibilant side with the stock pads, but velour pads straightened that out nicely.

Funny there are M50 that are better than M50. AudioTechnica makes RH-A30 for Roland. They use practically all M50 design with some "insignificant" differences like for example they are open and have velour pads - which in fact makes them completely different. Don't know how much sibilant Ultrasone are, but A30 can be really harsh at times. Looking at frequency response graphs of ATH-A900X I think I prefer my super flat A30...
