Re manual tagging, I think if you are new to computer audio, it can be wearisome, but anyway a DAP assumes that you are in computer audio already, and if you have a large library of music files, IMO it's inevitable to tag your library in order to navigate it via searching and hierarchical menu. To navigate music files from the OS finder to choose one and play it is almost absurd (how much clicks and pointing cursor is required?) and managing the folder structure of the music library organized is far more unstable than keeping tags in music files and let the software manage a DB of tags. I think if you have a large enough library, you can't avoid tagging it. If your library is not so big, managing problematic files manually is not so big deal. If you can't tag them, you can manage the names of the deepest folders for M's folder feature, or of course you can tag them in roman characters. (It's up to your philosophy, Faye Wong vs 王菲?). So a tagging based interface is almost natural on a DAP as well as in PC audio IMO.
M's interface is not ideal, most of all the lack of hierarchical menu is a real problem, but I think it is yet more elegant solution than folder navigation. One exceptional case is when you have to listen to a new file very quickly. Because of the time for library scan, it will be impossible with M, I could do it on AK240 with folder browsing. But I doubt it is really a big deal.
