It's a gimmick. Definitely a gimmick.

This isn’t just some marketing gimmick

Hah, they already said it isn't.

Tell that to Philips then. : p

That's technically the first since it was announced last year.

Philips' is a headphone. The Z:ero is an earphone. Also I think Philips claims its headphone is the first to use the Lightning connector for its signal, and not the first digital earphone/headphone.

Too many foreseeable bottlenecks not for me to think it's not a gimmick. Marketing fluff ftw!

Didn't Sony do a DACphone combo too?

I don't expect good things from it sound wise but I jumped on. I jumped on those cat ear headphones indiegogo way back when and haven't heard from them in a good long while about their progress lol.

Yeah! The MDR-1ADAC. It has much more potential IMO.

On the DACphone topic, it would be so cool if the next Beats Pro features a Lightning connector and a built-in DAC. Since Beats is under new management now, it's a plausible possibility.

There was actually buzz about that on the Apple buys Beats thread. I'm interested to see how this goes.

Nay. Too many problems with this concept.

What is the quality of the dac and amp section? What parts are they using? What is the circuitry design for balance and noise reduction? If a competitor comes out with another "digital" ear/headphone, their dac and amp section would also vary in quality. There is no consistency. Having an external portable dac and amp allows the user to control another part of their audio chain.

While I appreciate the company for trying to appeal to consumers who are aware of things such as dacs and amps, the actual consumers who are actually concerned about dacs and amps will most likely not purchase this product. In the end, they're attracting the same crowd of people who are buying from mass marketed companies who fall for marketing buzzwords and outlandish claims.

Also on their compatible smartphones FAQ section, they should have included a mention of Lolipop having native OTG support for digital output.
