Isn't the whole point of audio to get closer to an "ideal" sound. And sometimes these ideals are impossible to recreate.
Well anyways, now that I have these CIEMs in my hands, I can only go through the system backwards. Start from my upper budget limit and somehow demo the rest. Your method of reselling will never work for me. I've never been able to resell anything for more than 70-80% of its price, a situation that I understand because even I wouldn't pay that much for something used no matter how good of a condition it is in. I would continually lose money with that method.
So to save money, all I can do is purchase something close to the ideal (which I infer from reviews) and then work backwards to verify and appreciate what I currently own.
That's not the point. Not to be an elitist, but the dissatisfaction could just stem from lack of experience, on what you're hearing, what you hear, of what you thought you were going to hear. Again, you're trying to beat the system, but that's just not the ******* point.
I want to say generational gap but we're the same age.
