>tfw friend's expensive router is full of trouble
That's why we're currently using my old used Fritz DSL modem as router, works flawlessly and I bought it for 21€ only. His 140€ Netgear has too many unneeded specs that actually interfere with the connection, don't know why. Have simplified the settings but still got trouble with connecting.
I use the ASUS RT-AC68U and it's a heck of a beast. And if you have T-Mobile you can get the router for free on loan or buy one for less than retail.

One of the bigger issues now is in general how wifi doesn't extend too far into the house. On my desktop at my old house I used wifi and was a room away from the router and had super inconsistent wifi. I'm like 2 rooms away from the current router and wifi is unbearable now. Using an powerline outlet adapter thing right now but get 14mbit down when I pay for a 60mbit down line.
Considering this or the one Axel recommended right now.

Oh my, I have T-Mobile but didn't know they sold/loan routers. I'll have to look into that.

Aaah right, my neighbor also had that problem and totally ridiculous one on top of it.
Back then I put the Netgear in the kitchen, his room is just next to the kitchen yet he said he didn't get strong signal and thus plugged his repeater again.
I was like What it's just next to each other but couldn't help it, it's problematic. AFAIK according to experiences with my other friend's and my brother's Fritzbox, their wifi covers large area. It's around 200€ DSL modem/router and doesn't look nice but werks great
There's a catch to getting it as a free loaner, you have to have a phone capable of T-Mobile's WIFI Calling feature. But at least it's not iPhone only anymore.

Cool, I'll consider it as well.
So my brother and I are looking at new routers to replace our aging router. Since our birthday is same day next week we ended up looking up higher end stuff like the netgear nighthawk x6, was just a tad expensive but it looks like other family members are willing to chip in... Nighthawk x6 may be possible...
