I received the Soundpeats A2 for a nominal charge in exchange for an honest review. (Thanks to Ada @ Soundpeats!)
About me
I'm a music enthusiast with a large collection of IEMs and a few headphones. I listen to a variety of music styles including; rock, indie, classical, jazz and EDM. I like a balanced sound signature, good bass extension with plenty of detail.
Packaging
The headphones come in a fairly standard box which includes:
• The headphones.
• A micro USB charging cable.
• A 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable (so you can use them wired)
• A fabric carrying bag.
Nothing much to write home about here, but looks more premium than their cost.
Build & Comfort
The headphones are constructed out of plastic with foam filled ”pleather” pads which fit rather comfortably over my largish ears. They feel solidly put together and are fairly lightweight.
They are very comfortable and you almost forget you’re wearing them at times.
On the right ear cup they have a volume rocker with a button in middle. This middle button is used for powering them on and off, play/pause and to enter pairing mode. They are very tactile and it's easy to locate the middle button by touch alone.
There's a separate button for the rather redundant “bass boost” function, but more on that later.
Sound
My standard expectation for low cost headphones from China is a consumer friendly v-shaped sound with plenty of bass.
Bass
• No surprises here, bass is warm and strongly emphasised. It very occasionally verges into boomy territory, but is overall very well controlled. Sub bass extension is way above expectation and I can hear as low as 30hz. Their bass response makes them excellent for watching TV and movies, where you can feel explosions and deep rumbling bass.
Mids
• This was the biggest surprise for me! The mids, whilst being slightly recessed, are clear, full of detail and have an accurate natural timbre. They remain unobscured by the warm bass and are imaged extremely well. Separation is well above expectation for the price range. The clear, detailed mids give the sound a very immersive feeling.
Highs
• Here I would expect the highs to be emphasised and prone to sibilance, but that is not the case at all. The highs roll off at the right point and are balanced nicely with the mids. You're in zero danger of having your eardrums split in two with sharp treble here. I would describe them as smooth and detailed.
Soundstage
• Soundstage is wider than it is deep, with excellent imaging and separation.
Isolation and Leakage
Bass Boost
The least said about this the better! It increases the mid bass and makes them sound very muddy. Pointless!
Functionality and features
The box claims a 20hr battery and given that I've not charged them once since I received them nearly 2 weeks ago seems like a conservative estimate, these things stay charged forever!
Should you ever run out of charge you can listen to them with the included 3.5 mm to 3.mm aux cable.
They are easily paired (by holding down the power button) with any device. I have used them with my LG webos TV and with my Samsung S8.
There's either no, or very little audio lag, which means you can use these for videos without any discernible (to me at least) audio delay.
There's no “lossless” codecs here and they utilise Bluetooth 4.1 and connect to my smartphone via SBC (standard Bluetooth connection). My OCD subconscious keeps telling me I should notice the compression and limitations of the SBC, but my ears disagree, and I really enjoy the sound of these headphones over Bluetooth.
Conclusion
I didn't expect to like theses headphones but accepted the offer to review them as I was curious. Confirmation bias is a strong thing to get over and despite my concerns over the limitations of standard Bluetooth, I find myself using these (and liking them) more and more.
They are comfy, sound great and the battery lasts forever.
For the price of £32.99 on Amazon they are a complete bargain!
