Are any of the "pro" amp builders still around?

I started work on a PPA v1.0B that I never finished. This was back in late 2003/2004. I since finished school and started working ridiculous hours. Back then I remember that there were a few respected members who built PPAs for a small fee. Are they still around? I'd like to have mine...

A Happy Audio-Technica A900 user for 2 years. What should be next?

I had spent a considerable amount of time on this forum trying to determine the best headphone to purchase. Little did I know when I first arrived here that I'd have to consider many things in my search - audio range, pre-amplification, etc. After a long search I decided upon the A900 for...

What the masses think of Audiophiles...?

Ripped from another, non-audiophile board, in response to a post on a group buy of cable interconnects: ""Audiophiles" are a scary lot. Anything that ends in "phile" usually isn't complimentary. I attended an audio club meeting locally, once. I like great quality sound, but to sit around a...

    Toytronic. What a Label...

CiM Abfahrt Hinwil Gimmik Damn, what incredible music. They are competing with City Centre Offices and Morr Music for best electronic label, in my book.

Any Recommendations for a Momentary Switch besides the Bulgin?

I'm going to use a momentary switch for the PPA, making use of a simple-circuit that Wooderson used to allow this to work. However, the famous Bulgin Vandal-Resistan switch is onboxiously expensive at a hefty $22. Any other cool looking ones you all know of that are cheaper?! Thanks a bunch guys.

    quick ppa question

Can I use a simple 9v to test the power supply portion? I don't see why not, but seeing as how the PPA is on the whole a lot more complex, I was thinking that perhaps the power supply portion was also significantly modded in addition to the amplifier part, rendering this undoable.

    Distortion = Battery drain?

My once beautiful sounding PIMETA is now distorting. If I drop the volume the distortion goes away. Is this a normal characteristic of a dying battery?

    Wiring a SwitchCraft Jack

There is another thread on this, however, no answer was given, and the links to JPGs are dead. I have attached a small jpg drawing I made. Thanks a bunch!

    PPA Enclosure Ideas Wanted.

I was dead set on making a PPA just like Wooderson's, you know, the "glowing PPA", but in an impulse realized that I'd like something more unique. I really want to go with a wooden enclosure, however, I'm realizing this may take more work than a metal enclosure, since Par Metal and Hammond...

Novel Idea (or perhaps not) for PPA power-on configuration?

Once again, I'm sure I'm merely illustrating my ignorance, but... So far, the various incarnations of the PPA I've seen around these boards all make use of a regular switch - a conventional toggle, pushbutton, or even a momentary switch (with added circuitry) - to power on the PPA. Has...

    Discrepancies of Audiophile Product Lines?

While I understand that some manufactures want to provide nuances in the listening experience along with a general increase in sound quality, why are there such a prevalence of both utter crap and incredible sound quality among Headphone manufacturers, and not in some expected linear manner...

    Did I damage my PIMETA?

I was confused as to why I was suffering from DC Offset of about 30mV on each channel, when I had meticulously assembled the amp with proper soldering skill. I finally realized the problem: I had populated R3G with the same value I populated the others with. Now I get 1.5mV of so on both...

    Measuring voltages

Can I ask you all two quick questions? 1. In Tangent's Pimeta write-up he says, after setting up the power supply of the PIMETA, to: Quote: Next, hook a power supply to the supply wires, and jumper the power switch wires together. The LED should light up, and if not, find out why. If...

The science of Impedance, Efficiency, and Quality

Why are some phones low impedance, and some high? At first I thought it correlated with quality but then we see Grado headphones at 32 ohms or so AND my new ATH A900s at a 40 ohms, and they both sound fantastic. Add to this confusing mix, the notion of efficiency, where a high impedance can may...

    Wow. Audio Technica A900s

Just got these from JBroad, who by the way is a first-rate seller. These headphones are absolutely amazing. Thank god all the research and questioning from helpful fellows like Lindrone, Rligeti and many others got me to make an informed choice without ever hearing them. These are exactly what I...

Quick Checklest: What opamps can be used in a PPA/Pimeta?

I'm assuming both are sufficiently of the same design that there is no compatibility difference. Hopefully this list will make it easier for those planning a purchase to "roll" chips. Here's what I've gathered: AD8610AR AD8610BR AD8620AR OPA2132 (suffix?) OPA2134 (suffix?) OPA2111...

    Dt880 for $237.50 @ B&H (SpecialOrder)

Just a heads up since this is a better price for a new pair than I've seen anywhere. Their prices on Beyerdynamics are extremely good for some reason. Just looking out for my Heaphone "bruthas". Hope this helps.
