    Digital Coax length question

You are talking about a digital cable; either it works or it doesn't. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something (probably a digital cable).

    FLAC vs. Apple Lossless

I don't think that ALAC not being "Free" or "Open" is much of an issue, given that there are free (and not Apple authored) software solutions for transcoding from one to the other. One additional distinction between lossless formats which should not be overlooked is how they handle tagging.

    DACMagic question

Huh? 1. Connect both your cd player and your sound card to the DAC using digital cables (the DAC has multiple inputs and the ability to switch between them). It also has a usb input so you can even get rid of the sound card. 2. Connect your DAC's analogue outputs to your headphone amp/ stereo.

DAT redorder as DAC, improvement with the M-Audio Audiophile 2496?

I have used a Tascam DA-P1 as a DAC/AMP in the past (because I had one lying around). While it isn't as good as a modern (24/96) dac, It wasn't bad. However, unless you can get one for super-cheap, I suspect you can do better. -Noah

    Next headphones after K701's

I am sympathetic to your search for another set of cans. I too have and love the k701 for what they do well, but I decided to get another pair to complement them. Given that the k701 is open, with less emphasis on the Bass, I went looking for a closed, more bass heavy pair of headphones. I've...

CD player needed for critical listening room...

Um, if you already have a Central Station, which has a very good DAC section, buy the least expensive DVD player you can find with real 24/96 output. Spend the rest on music (or gas) -Noah

    Review: ZERO 24 BIT/192KHz DAC/Headphone Amp/Pre-Amp

Hi all: My Zero just arrived today, and I must say that even right out of the box this thing sounds really good. I had been driving my k701s with a mid 90's Spectral pro audio AD/DA converter, which I thought sounded really good (at least when compared to anything else I had around, Creek...

AKG K-701 -> Are there any "similar" Closed Cans??

I am surprised that noone has mentioned the AKG K271 Studio, fiven that it is the closed version of the k701. Given that the OP likes the Bass signatre of the k701s (as do I), he might find the k271 to be the best match. -Noah
