Any opinions / reviews on Gemtune APPJ PA1502A

Ha! Occasionally revisiting the thread. Good to see you still enjoying yours, I'm still enjoying mine, it's one great amp :).

Yes but it's the electrical characteristics of the tube vis a vis the circuit that matters I think. A given tube will express in a certain way depending on the relation of its gm, voltage swing, transconductance, amplification factor, plate dissipation etc etc. to the circuit characteristics...

My very first amp, a LDMKIV se If I remember, had very syrupy tubes which, after the initial excitement wore off fairly soon and I never wanted that sound again, I wanted realism more than syrup. But you're right, it's the circuit not the tubes that is important, I think Sonic would have had...

Haha 😆. Absolutely, agree 100%. That's exactly why I always steered clear of 300B. But curious how Sonic managed to put one together in Telemachus though. My own journey began with the Supermods thread, some guys together with one aim to perfect the LD, as much as possibly anyway, and that...

Yep ☺️. Some say tubes are accurate for realistic reproduction, live sound, real distortion - the marshall guitar amps for example, harmonics, realistic decay, realistic speed for music reproduction, not pinpoint like SS, linear voltage swings, etc etc. Of course with all the gizmos at their...

Well, before the Telemachus came about I was interested in how the new ideas that Sonic implemented sounded, like on your amp for example. After that when he put forward the Telemachus idea, old classic tube types but with the new technology I felt that it would be a very interesting...

Yes, that's a great shame, that can no longer happen. That's great that you have so many choices with your sound, but I've reached the point where I'm happy with the sound on my amp, even though I have limited options. Probably to do with all the angst with modding mine, I don't want to do that...

You are lucky that you have a custom made amp with many possible adjustments, something that the big boys would not bother to have in their amps because of the manufacturing cost. You have so many available features that it would be possible to find the sweet spot for any tube you might want to...

You are sooooo lucky to have one of the few Telemachuses every made, I think 2 or maybe 3. This will be the pinnacle of Sonic's achievements, who knows how great it would have been to see this achieve the greatness it deserves. I was interested in this above all else, the 300B together with some...

x2! But I do enjoy headphones too, when it gets later in night. Comparing my headphones to speakers, there's not a lot of difference, both good soundstage, resolve etc. Speakers, better realism, but headphones you can hear the intricacies of the detail better possibly, probably due to room...

The trouble is wooden fuses only work in wooden amps... and... quantum fuses only work in quantum computers 😆.

Not sure about this, it is either single ended or balanced, it can't be single ended and balanced at the same time. I don't know about Oblivion but it may be that either the 6.3mm output is balanced or that the XLR can output single ended by only having one side outputting through the XLR's...

Ha yes! Your amp is infinitely adjustable and for that comes the need to pay attention to settings lol. For that you might need to become acquainted with Ohm's law. I imagine that Sonic provided a good safety margin with the wattage on your components so that they wouldn't fry when your hand...

The main advantage with the Russian caps is value/money ratio and build quality. For the money they are superb and compare very well with other top quality caps. You would probably be satisfied with all top quality caps although they all have their differences, Mundorf - top end, Jupiter -...

Yes I must say the insides of Sonic's amps are so neat and uncluttered it doesn't look like there's enough going on to produce such great results. Re: cathode bypasses we did this on the LD thread and I found a handy online tool you can use to set values use...

My modded LD has given me no problems for many years, in fact neither of my modded amps have had problems, that's with all the add-ons, (and the shoddy build.. talking about my own modest skills). We have pushed those amps to the limits so from what I know of Sonics design expertise he will have...

Yes we in the LD thread all went for Jupiters because of what you said and loved them. I have them in both my amps now.

You're lucky, that was the amp I was looking at at some point because of how it was supposed to merge the old and the new. Anathema.. now that sounds very, well heavy, going by the name, I will look and see!

Haha, I had forgotten about that thread. Just checked it out again, happy days with Sonic embarking on his exciting adventure! There is some information there, mostly about Sonic's progress with the new amp builds. Not enough sadly for a complete build but some useful information and pictures...

I agree, I think the positives outweigh the negatives. I don't want to put words into either MrCurwen or Sonic neither of who are here to speak but I do remember what they said. Neither of them expressed the desire to patent or restrict anything AFAIK, on the contrary MrCurwen was only too...

You all have made good points. It would be a shame if that was it. The problem is not knowing what the only person who is still involved with his basic design thinks. I have given my view based on what I know of Sonic and MrCurwen because of what they have said in the past so we will see.

    Oblivion | UltraSonic Studios

Good luck with that. I think it would be a great tribute to Sonic that his work was being carried on. It is a pity that we can't contact MrCurwen as it would have been good to have his blessing, I hope that such a tribute would meet with his approval. If he does communicate some time then maybe...

Haha, like west end vs east end here. Unbelievable! Yes he was interested in airing his ideas but didn't want to implement them himself particularly. So what do you think of the reverse engineering idea?

No longer I believe. I think he had other interests so maybe he is pursuing them now. Sounds great to me. I think you would have to make clear that you were not building Ultrasonic amps.
