    $200 A900 or $200 5.1 Channel Speaker System?

The question really comes down to placement. If you're like me, and live with music playing 24/7, then you'll want speakers, because I don't like having headphones on all the time; speakers just give me freedom. That said, if you're going to be using them almost exclusively when you're sitting...

    Stupid question about output/impedance

Basically, for any sort of portable, unless you want to lug around an amp, you're not going to be driving any Senns besides the PX100/200s, or anything really above $100 in price. The sound and output you'd get just wouldn't be what you'd want. I'm not knowledgable on the science behind this...

What is the cheapest decent closed headphone one can buy?

I've heard good things about the HD280s, but I've also heard that they have a longer than normal burn-in period. I have a pair of Bose TriPorts (prepares to be flamed) and I like them a lot for isolated music and movies, but I can't really recommend them because their soundstage is so narrow...

    Hearing IS believing...

Just picked up a pair of Koss PortaPro2s for my iPod. I had heard decent things about them, but let me just say that Koss is right: Hearing is believing. The box was crap; mine didn't even have a warranty pamphlet or manual in it. I personally find the design of the phones somewhat awkward, but...

MP3 vs WMA and Harddrive Space

128kbps MP3s and 128kbps WMAs should be the same size, since they're both compressing to the same bitrate. My people I've seen on audio forums dislike WMA immensely, but I've found that at 128kbps, it does sound nicer than MP3.

For all ya bassheads out there: What song tests your headphones to the limit?

Deepsky - "View From A Stairway" >>> This fantastic song goes all over the map... Tight, deep electronic bass, subtle acoustic strings, and an endless barrage of effects that'll really bring your headphones to their limit. E.S. Posthums - 'Nara" >>> Beautiful, deep drums & flutes. Fluke -...

Help, i can't make up my mind. Xtra or iPod???

Well, I had a Zen USB2.0 (still have it actually, though I kind of gave it to my dad), and I liked it a lot. The Creative software was a bit buggy, but besides that, it was an excellent player. I ended up getting a 20GB 4th generation iPod when I switched from PC to Apple (PowerBook G4...

    Hell Froze Over

Well, I personally think the "Hell froze over" quote is hilarious, and am glad to see Apple has such a good sense of humor. I've used the iTunes Store a couples times. I'm on an Mac, FYI. Personally, I find the quality acceptable. It's probably not "audiophile" quality, but for normal use, the...

Want: Flash (no moving parts) MP3 player for sports...

Rowing is awesome. I just started this year, and it's seriously the best thing I've ever gotten myself into. I row for Rollins College, in Winter Park, FL. We usually get radio during the erg sessions (like our 4k test today... ugh), but the distance running we do is so boring. I'm not sure if...

Want: Flash (no moving parts) MP3 player for sports...

I'm on my college's rowing team, and we do a lot of erging and distance running. Basically, I'd like some music while I do this stuff. I'm looking for a MP3 player that meets the following criteria: a) Cheap b) Flash-based ... no HD, no moving parts (I have an iPod, I'm just not willing to...

Best Closed Phones with Isolation for Ipod

I have the Senn PX200s, and I highly recommend them assuming you're comfortable with the following two characteristics: a) They're extremely placement sensitive. If you don't get them exactly on the sweet spot of your ear, all the bass just disappears. b) They have an extremely small...

    favorite electronic album (all types)

Here are some electronic albums that just always seem to make their way into my CD player... "Out There And Back" by Paul van Dyk "Movement In Still Life" by BT "Perfecto Presents Another World" by Paul Oakenfold (the second CD is sublime) "Reanimation" by Linkin Park (so it's not...

    Latest iPod review posted

I have a third-gen iPod (20gb). I love it. It works flawlessly with my Apple PowerBook G4, and honestly the sound is great. It is a bit less articulate than the Zen, but still great. The battery life isn't as good as the Zen's, but I still find the iPod to be an excellent MP3 player. I believe...

Review: Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen USB 2.0

I'll try to make this short, sweet, and easy on the techno-babble. Size: The Zen is bigger than the iPod (any generation), though not by all that much. It's a bit heavier as well. That said, it's still very small and compact (maybe the size of an audio cassette case), and hardly the "brick"...

    MD or iPod?

I was torn between MD and MP3 for a while, but I ended up going with the Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen. 20GB let's me store my entire music collection at 320kbps CBR, and at that quality with my Senn PX200s, the music sounds great. Superb size, quality, and convenience. ATRAC is nice, but in the...

    MP3 Filtering Question?

Why is there a polyphase filter in the 19KHz range in the heavily touted "--alt-preset standard?" What exactly is this filter taking out?

    Hmmm...

Am I the only one who thinks that 'stereo' encoded mp3s sound much deeper, more natural, and less scratchy than 'joint stereo' mp3s? I've been messing around with this a little. Each time I listen to a true 'stereo' mp3, it feels much 'wider.' Thoughts?

    LAME Presets

EAC. I got it working, thanks. Do you guys do other things while you rip mp3s (web surf, chat, homework, etc)? I've had some bad luck with mp3 encoding in the past, so I guess I'm a bit paranoid. Will using my computer for simple tasks, like the ones above, screw up the process?
