The stock zmf cable is pretty nice these days, braided and only 60$. Same connector as audeze cables and, well it's only 60$! What a bargain compared to some cables! Other companies must be scratching their heads at figuring out how they can charge such a low price....

Might be a longshot, but have you checked the cable? You might try switching the left cable to the right driver

Yeah perf pads on closed cans are a nono. The flatter pads are the universe pads which have more impact, and the angled pads are the auteur pads which have a larger soundstage and maybe more treble presence. Enjoy!

Mine are ironwood, so you might be right

I had the universe on for a while for that sweet impact, but I think the auteur pads won me over. They sound more balanced, the soundstage is a bit bigger, and I feel they are a bit less fatiguing so I can listen longer. Though maybe they are just less fatiguing because I'm listening to less...

I've always been afraid to take mine part, very interesting! The kh-71's don't sound as bad as I was expecting, but the tuning is a little wonky as you described. Soundstage and imaging are decent, and the cup resonance adds a little spice.

I think I've settled on genalex gold lion Kt66's and rca clear top 12au7's in pentode mode. I like the dynamism! I thought the clear tops were a little bright for me, but better source material seems to alleviate that issue. It all makes for a clean, detailed, and punchy combination.
