Joe Zawinul has died
sad day... but i believe he's among those who live on -
the next generation of old fogeys
my listening fare has always included oldtimers like bob dylan, neil young or johnny cash, so i know there's no such thing as "too old to rock'n'roll". even chuck berry and little richard are still up and about, so that's that. there remains that other question of whether to burn out or fade... -
x-fi music digital out - only with adapter?
simple (i hope) question: does the x-fi card itself (not the breakout box!) has a digital out that can be used to provide bit-perfect to an external dac? do you just have to set this up in the software/drivers or do you need an adapter? there's a lot of conflicting information on that topic...- Riordan

Beatles on CD - any good remasters yet?
i always thought it pretty shameful how lackluster the beatles sound on compact disc - not only compared to the wonderful vinyl recordings but on an absolute scale. last i read about it nothing had changed, there was no remastered version available that was worth anything. is that still the case... -
Good noise-cancelling phones? (not iems)
a friend of mine can't use iems because of a medical condition (some past ear infection) but needs extra isolation because of another medical condition (tinitus) combined with yet another condition (audiophilia mobilis). so... closed phones don't provide enough isolation for him, he can't use...- Riordan

amazing amazon book review
william faulkner's novel 'as i lay dying' is a strange book, not usually counted among the classics because of its subject matter. but see what HorrorSciFiReadingDude has to say about it... Quote: I picked this book up because the title caught my eye. I mean "As I Lay Dying"?! That's...- Riordan

what's up with chaintech?
could it be that there is THE one perfect soundcard for music enthusiasts on a budget? bit-perfect digital output and audiophile analog stereo output at the unbelievable price of 25$ ? apparantly yes. it's the chaintech av-710. but could it also be that the company producing this marvel...- Riordan

R&B is not R&B
the idea for this thread (more a rant with invitation to participate actually) came when i saw the thread about the top 40 problem. one point there was that "too much rap and R&B is in the charts". this made me stop for a moment. what R&B? when was the last time that R%B was in the top 40... -
german bits in english lyrics
every once in a while american or british artists use the most unmusical of languages for a silly quote, often with ludicrous spelling and dubious grammar, yet sometimes quite eloquently. my current favorite in this discipline is franz ferdinand (scottish indie band) singing "ich heisse... -
famous sons and daughters
some artists don't have to make a name for themselves, they already got one by birth. while being the heir apparent surely makes it easier for them to reach the spotlight they later have to live up to the expectations... some follow in their father's or mother's footsteps, some shed those... -
larks' tongues in dust and grime
this is about king crimson's "larks' tongues in aspic" - i have the "30th anniversary edition" 24 bit HDCD remaster (european, virgin records) - and much of it sounds absolutely AWFUL. how come? it includes the worst distortion i have ever heard on cd - "exiles" and "easy money" sound like... -
dire straits remastered
i have just listened to my remastered copy of "communiqué" and am blissfully happy with its quality. two questions: 1. are the other dire straits remasters as good as this one? 2. if i buy at amazon, do i get the remastered versions or the older ones? (it doesn't show and they have... -
song titles in literature
i'm currently reading "girlfriend in a coma" by douglas coupland. the book is wonderful and there's some funny easter eggs for music fans nestled in there: song titles and lines by the smiths... not as simple quotes but used as fairly central parts of the dialogue or descriptions, woven into the... -
most ridiculous amg rating?
www.allmusic.com is a fine database for music fans and has some nice reviews - but their rating system and its outcome is less than helpful. there are some blatant mistakes that go way beyond "subjectivity". you know what i'm talking about, you've scratched your heads (or ears) yourself? my...
