Are you sure the high output was triggered on the V10, that you used the ESS DAC and not the integrated Qualcomm one ? (I see HD518 impedance is 50ohm, rather low, so I really wonder). The volume could be low with the integrated DAC on the V10, but once in AUX or HIGH mode, with the Sabre DAC...

Yes, for android it's a bit of a lotery... But you could test with USB audio player pro (this app uses its own USB driver for audio, bypassing android audio), it works with many devices (even not working out of the box). Then you'll pay for the app if it succeeds  ...
