I waited for a sale on the ZX and I'm glad that I did. I really find the ACM handy. Its also very nice when you have a headphone with a coiled cable.   I was also surprised to see that it drives a 250 ohm beyer to a decent volume.

Thats odd, I never noticed any muffle on the DX. In fact I noticed very little difference between the DX and STX with my HD598.

A good open can for under $100, I doubt that you'll find one.    That 558 is probably your best bet. Most people complain about the price since they're normally over $150 and you can buy a 598 for not much more than that if you keep your eyes open. I doubt that you'll be disappointed for...

I've never had the chance to test out a good pair of closed headphones. What should I try? I really love my DT990 so I'm pretty tempted by the DT770 but I'm also considering the ultrasone pro 750.   I'm honestly thinking of just giving the CAL a shot.

Bright, I had to eq the highs down a hair.   They with out a doubt seem to have the bass that I was looking for. Sound stage is about what I'm used to with the HD598. Mids are better than I was expecting.    Thats just my impressions out of the box. 

I just got a pair of DT990 250s from "proaudiostar" on ebay. They were listed as "manufacturer resealed". I don't know what that means but they look brand new to me. He had them listed at $175. I made an offer for $160 and he took it. I think thats a great deal. He does have one other pair listed.

I would really love a pair of headphones with a little more presence in the low end. I'm currently using an HD598 off of a Xonar STX. I like open cans but have never really used a good pair of closed headphones. I'm really thinking about the DT770. I really wish that I jumped on that Ultrasone...

I've been playing around with my STX for a couple of days now and it sounds great but to be honest with my HD598 its a bit too neutral for my tastes. I'm thinking of swapping out the op-amps. Is there anything that I should look into for a little more bass? I'm considering some LME49860s.

How does the mixamp 5.8 hold up against something like the xonar dx? I have to be honest that the wireless aspect seems nice but it worries me a bit. Does it have any impact on sound quality? 

I think that you missed my point. I paid what the Xonar DX goes for now almost four years ago. I don't think that this is going to drive down prices on the rest of the line up. You did read the post that I was responding to, right? Quote:
