Naim Audio Uniti Atom Headphone Edition

Nice to see other owners also ferrying their Uniti Atom HEs around the home. I was thinking at the other day that this is my first true portable DAC since I have been carrying it around the house so much. It is far easier to setup than the USB-only DACs I used for this purpose back in the day...

    Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Discussion Thread

I have the Grado SR325is which is also has an upper mid boost and sounds a bit more punchy than MSR7. These are very open sounding, image well and very lightweight so should also be an option though you might want to look at the RS2 or higher models. Focal is also great, the Clear MG is as...

Elemental Watson Class-A Valve/Mosfet Hybrid Headphone Amplifier (Review added)

@circlecrystal, if you want to copy and paste information from the internet at least do it in a form that is relevant to the two products under discussion. Your response clearly indicate that your knowledge about electronics is very limited, I would suggest looking at some DIY and other...

Elemental Watson Class-A Valve/Mosfet Hybrid Headphone Amplifier (Review added)

Not quite as simple as that. Project Ember is Class AB, but amplification architecture seldom has as much to do with the sound compared to the implementation thereof. In addition the Ember will likely run much cooler than the Class A Watson which may a plus or a minus for some. The Project...

[NEW] Audio Technica CKR series (CKR10, CKR9, CKR7)

Nice review, agree with most of the points here. I find them a bit fatiguing after a while and the fit isn't the best, but I definitely enjoy them more than I did the Westone 4 and think they sound better as well. I enjoy the snappy bass and crisp presentation a lot and they are quite airy...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

I really liked the Sunrise II and the Ember should be able to drive it even better. The Ember would be on my list too.

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

I haven't heard it, but the HE-500 works better with amps suited for low impedance cans. The Vali 2, Lyr 2 and Jotunheim would all likely be better options.

Elemental Watson Class-A Valve/Mosfet Hybrid Headphone Amplifier (Review added)

I suspect it's hidden for good measure then. I think you should find a multimeter to make sure the valves aren't operating out of spec.

Elemental Watson Class-A Valve/Mosfet Hybrid Headphone Amplifier (Review added)

Sure those pots aren't for bias adjustments or does the amp do that adjustment on the valve automatically, I can't find any info on it, I'm hoping it is in the manual?

    Resonessence Labs Concero discussion/review thead

Verified that it works with the AQVox only. I actually haven't used the AQVox with the Concero previously as I could not get it to work and loaned the PSU to a friend, but I recently got it back and this time didn't have any issues. Two up presses of the Apple remote and I started getting...

    Resonessence Labs Concero discussion/review thead

I only have an AQVox PSU so will try it here and see if it works. I presume you already have an Apple remote to change the direction of the SPDIF?   I'm surprised how much the Concero sound improved through the external PSU. Also slight improvement this way as a USB->SPDIF converter.

Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution

Not sure how different the e editions are from the i, but I preferred the 325is to RS1i for metal, though the former was definitely brighter sounding so YMMV. From the analysis I've seen of the PS500 it seems to be tuned quite differently and a bit flatter so I do think it might be better...

I use Neutrik XLR -> RCA adapters on my Theta DS Pro Gen III with no issues.

    Resonessence Labs Concero discussion/review thead

If you want to keep the functionality of the Concero, while maintaining portability look at the NuPrime uDSD. It's a great little converter as well.

Does anyone have experience with the Kef LS50?

Would definitely recommend dual subs like the SVS model suggested and then to plug the ports using the foam supplied as it will clean up the mid bands due to putting less strain on them to produce the bass frequencies. I've sold my two pairs of LS50s and are now only running the KEF R500s with a...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

The Gungnir probably has a more potent analogue output stage. I definitely think it's one of the things that accounts for the dynamic and punchy sound of the Theta DACs.

    Resonessence Labs Concero discussion/review thead

Updated my Concero as well with no hitch on Windows 10. Haven't managed to pick up any differences yet, but we'll see as time goes on. My Concero does double duty in my Hi-Fi as a SPDIF converter for the Theta and I use it for playback of my HD Tracks library, whenever I need higher than 48KHz...

Audiophilleo 1 and 2 USB to S/PDIF transport

My Audiophilleo 2 died last week. Looks like a wire broke off the BNC socket as the glue came unstuck that was supposed to prevent the connector from from twisting in the chassis. Not impressed that it doesn't feature any strain relief on the wires coming from the connector. As I bought mine...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

Capacitors, especially electrolytic ones, are one of those components that age with time and eventually start acting up and affect the sound. Usually very good caps are used in high end products so often they end up lasting longer, but statistically the failure rate increases with age. If you...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Don't bother with the Dragonfly as an amp. Its okay as a DAC, but doesn't have nearly enough power to make the HE-500 sound anywhere near acceptable. You can look at the Garage 1217 Project Solstice if you are looking at a good quality affordable amplifier, the Garage 1217 are generally...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

I have to say with the Theta it would be a tough choice for me whether to go back to vinyl (I had a good Thorens TD-2001), not sure how good those converters were that you are referring to? I agree a well set up turntable is going to be good, but vinyl has its own set of issues, including the...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

Quote:   Interesting, I didn't know they made single ended versions of the DS Pro Gen 3 series. I definitely notice the processor boards are the same and you can see there aren't any cut outs for balanced outputs. Here is what mine looks like in comparison. The caps on mine look a bit...

I suspect you might have got conned with that, looks like a single ended Theta, it should be balanced. My Theta DS Pro Gen 3 looks a lot different inside than yours does. I have two analogue output boards with four PCM63s and balanced outputs.   Beautiful headphone setup though, looks very...
