Well it being cheap certainly doesn't make it very appealing. Rip some drivers off from a cheap but well received supra aural headphone, and the get some cheap but still good IEMs to match with it.

Heatshrink would be really stiff. You can have a combination of both my having the lace/sleeve covering the cables and using a small piece of heatshrink at the end of the sleeve and shrink it there to keep the sleeving in place.  As for the paint, you're going t have to find a way to take...

You do not have to recable with 8 strands. You could use as many strands as you want. It's a little unspecified of what you mean in the last sentence, but if you ordered solid-core wire, then yeah just do 2 signal 2 ground on a Litz braid.
