I tried that and contacted FiiO, turns out there's a relatively uncommon but known fault with the micro usb port not connecting sufficiently with the usb cable. None of the cables I have worked, so I sent it back for a refund and am now investing in an E17!

After uprading to Mountain Lion's 10.8.2 build (from 10.8.1) I've found that my E7 just isn't recognised anywhere. It doesn't appear as a USB device and it isn't present as a sound output in System Preferences.  Does anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing the issue?

If you didn't read it then no need to comment. Head-Fi is supposed to be a helpful community. Personally I can't see why a FiiO E17/E10/E7 wouldn't do a brilliant job solving your problem. If you don't mind a peripheral that is.

Has anybody had any success replacing the pads on the ZX700? I'm starting to find the stock ones uncomfortable.

I think it's not necessary, but as I said, bass boost makes my Sony's more versatile. Also I'm sure that there are some cans which the iPhone won't be able to drive alone. But no, realistically it does not need it.
