KJ I had the same problem when I resoldered a new wire on to a driver. I think it's due to too much heat damaging the contact of the solder pad with the fragile copper trace of the driver. When I tried to resolder again the solder pad lifted away completely and my attempts to get a new contact...

Yes direct from speaker posts on the back of the amp with an adapter I made. It is not overkill for an ortho in my experience. They love the power.

Yes i am. Direct from a rotel ra840 bx2 and both my orthos love it. The fostex seem to get a bigger jump in performance than my amfiton tds 15 compared to when I use them from iPhone.

Yes the amfiton are impressive Ludoo. Definitely a candidate for a transplant into a better cup and pads.

My fostex have been resurrected! I scraped the covering off the copper traces and got a complete circuit with my multimeter. So I purchased some wire glue and tried attaching the wires to the bare traces with it. This did not work so feeling rather desperate and willing to try anything I...

Thanks for the info on fixing a dud connection. Unfortunately I fear I did too much damage trying to scrape a bare copper trace and I am now mourning the death of my beloved fostex. Those solder pads are unbelievably fragile. However I will get a multimeter and see if there is any hope. I just...

Thanks for holding off on the amfiton RD. I am not trying to incite jelousy here but I am really enjoying these headphones. I now understand how collecting vintage orthos could become an addiction. In fact I was being tempted by a HP 1 on the local ebay only a day after getting the amfiton as I...

Yes that is it. Any tips on dismantling the cups and removing the drivers to avoid damage?

Just acquired a vintage amfiton Tds 15 from a fellow member. I have been enjoying a modded fostex t50 for the past year, so when an opportunity came up to get an old ortho at a good price I jumped. Well I must say it is a very impressive phone, very balanced and airy open sound. Even sounds good...

Welcome Ray. Vinyl does sound great through these. I also have a modified lenco and the fostex are similar in that they are both incredible value for money pieces of audio gear.

Great work HDman. Very generous of you to document your mod so well and congratulations on your results. I think I might try your mod as I can get all the materials you used even though I am very happy with my current configuration. Did you get your mic cable from Jaycar as well? I have used it...

Jaycar sell paxmate type foam. They also have a combined paxmate foam and dynamat style material as well.

Does anyone have a good method how to tin the thin litz wires in the stock cable? I have taken out the connector in the left cup and want to join the stock cable directly to the driver wires.

i have lamda pro and I don't listen to them anymore. Sure they have better headstage but the fostex is more "musical". Better midrange bass impact and dynamics. I need to sell my stax setup. Anyone interested?

Quote: Mrspeakers did you manage to steal a look at the secret sauce inside those phones because we are all wondering just what that secret is. Perhaps you had to sign a non-disclosure contract or was the safety of your family threatened if you reveal the mysteries of the paradox...

Great to see everyone exploring the effect of damping the driver differently to achieve a preferred sound. Personally at the moment I enjoy a lightly damped driver for more bass slam. Just tried an interesting thing that others have reported on previously. I made up a cable to run the tps direct...

Lift the bass means exactly what MrS just said. To get more treble play with reflex dots. I have used differential damping on the back of my drivers which is micropore on the 4 corners then 2 layers of felt around the edges and 1 layer over the middle of the driver. You can look at my mod on...

reflex dot increases HF. Any non porous material eg scotch tape will do as it reflects HF coming out the back of the driver back towards your ear. To much damping on the back of the driver will have a similar effect. That is also why removing the stock damping on the back of the driver and...

Regarding tt damping with plasticine/modeling clay my friends lenco gl75 had horrid bass feedback at high vol. A layer of belgrave around the inner diameter on the underside of the platter fixed it. I have plasticine on my lenco under the platter and top plate. I think anywhere you can put it...

Great to see another Aussie here hdman. Try some belgrave modeling clay which you can buy locally. It is fantastic for damping. It worked miracles on a friends turntable, almost unbelievable what it did. It will be much easier to use than dynamat and bluetack is next to useless for damping in...

IMO & ymmv to increase bass you have to reduce damping which allows the diaphragm move further. I did this by removing the stock damping on the back of the driver and replaced with thin wool felt only held in place with micropore tape around the edges. Resulted in large increase in bass which...
