PMPs vs Portable DACs?
Any DAC that accepts both power and signal is a "portable DAC" and I guess the larger ones would be "transportable DACs." HRT Media Streamer and gamma2 are examples of high-end portable DACs EDIT: just now saw the date... Sorry for bringing back a dead thread, I just saw it on "related...- Robot Metal

Ah, that'll do. Thanks. I think I saw that one before and confused it with one of the larger ones, but I saw a photo of it and realized I was mistaken.- Robot Metal

Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones
I use my portable Stax system to get people into high-end audio, heh. Got reactions like "Holy crap, I didn't know music can sound that smooth" and other comments saying how it sounds nothing like what they've heard before. Oddly enough, I haven't had anybody tell me how they wouldn't consider...- Robot Metal

The Stax thread (New)
Ah, thanks for the KGSS answer. I'm recapping an SRM-1 Mk1, but I'm not sure which brand to use. I heard a lot of good things about Black Gates, so I went with them. I'm willing to pay a lot to upgrade it (and I know Black Gates are rare), but I could use some input as to whether or not...- Robot Metal

The Stax thread (New)
I have a question: Sound quality-wise, is the KGSS a good match for headphones that aren't the Omega2? The ESP950 and Lambda phones mainly. I'll admit that I kinda remember reading somewhere years ago that the ESP950 wasn't a good match, but I can't seem to find that post anymore so I don't know...- Robot Metal

What should i upgrade to from HD600
Your ~$500 Stax options that are an upgrade from the HD600 are SR-Lambda Normal bias ($300), SR-001 portable earphones ($250) and maybe the SR-202 ($350). You should be able to eventually find the former two in the used forum. As for amping: Finding an SRM-1 amp for SR-Lambda/SR-202 might...- Robot Metal

DAC popularity check
In my opinion, *-end should be determined based on price alone because price isn't subjective and we don't have to argue about it. It does, however, give off the misconception that you always get what you pay for, so just keep in mind it's not true. Anyway, it ROUGHLY seems that low-end is...- Robot Metal

Pictures of Your Portable Rig [Part XIV]
I'm a bit of a newbie, so I can't really compare the SR-001 to a whole lot of headphones. They're kind of like the HD650, except the detail/speed/soundstage is a lot better. I've also read that people find them to have a sound signature close to the Omega2, but I guess I need to hear the SR-303...- Robot Metal
