Question about audio in DVD videos
I think DVD2AVI.exe does this quite well - rips the audio to a WAV file by default as far as I remember. May be hard to find online, though. Much of the DVD ripping software has disappeared due to lawsuits. If you have access to more powerful software, ProCoder 2.0 will do this as well...- pburke

Shoutcasting 128k ACC+v1or2 vs 192mp3
at those datarates, it's probably more relevant that the mp3 stream will play on more clients connected to the shoutcast server without causing hassles. At lower rates (<128k) mp3 is clearly outclassed by modern codecs. Peter- pburke

is the length of a USB cable a factor?
if you need a long USB 1.1 cable, this will do the job very well staring at 30 feet and $169... http://usbstuff.com/longcable.html Added benefit ( and a huge deal with my USB DAC ) is that you also isolate the computer from the DAC glvanically (no ground loops). I changed the receiver...- pburke

Mac Intel with Windows (BootCamp) - Any thought?
there are two interesting scenarios emerging: Gamers now can own Mac's too (Apple would like to see that) or Mac users who want to do more gaming will now not need to own a dedicated PC, but once they start using Windows, they may just move over to the dark side once they get over...- pburke

Take full advantage of HD650
I built these things for HD650s: http://didnt.doit.wisc.edu/audio/DDDAC16/dddac16.html Since that build I have moved to a USB-I2S interface on the latest version (although without headphone outputs - the next build will be a 24 chip unit with headphone output again). problem is you'll...- pburke

optical cable v. usb in a microdac
to confuse you even more - you can run USB through optical cables, too. Not cheap, but in my case it was necessary to get rid of ground loop issues. Works like a charm, plus it allowed me to move the DAC upstairs while leaving the noisy computer downstairs. Peter- pburke

DAC Options?
how about the USB board from Doede Douma? All the hard smd soldering is done. You do some assembly and hook up a 12V SLA battery. http://www.dddac.de/ma_dac31.htm the board is a complete DAC, but if you ever get around to more funds, you can grow it into a real high quality DAC. The USB...- pburke

Help me decide, a new DAC, or a new QUIET CASE?
not sure about your possibilities regarding space, but I have solved the computer noise problem by relocating the CPU to a room below my listening room. Does using Foobar make any real difference over Winamp?
I use winamp on my worksystem since it can stream to my own shoutcast server, and it does everything I need on a system where the speakers suck and the background noise is higher than anyone should tolerate. at home on my "high end system" I use Foobar, because a) it can play EAC cue sheets...- pburke
