Wolfson DACs are in the better sound DAPs, in the Cowons, for example, people raves over them, you can find a lot of reading on this forums. Those smartphones with Wolfson DACs can be patch with custom firmware/kernal to use the full potential of the DAC.

Have you looked at the Shure line? SRH440, 840 and 750DJ? I own the 840, easy to drive but little bulky. 440 might be something you are interested.
