A Meta-Analysis of High Resolution Audio Perceptual Evaluation (or How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Hi-Res)
This is free right now from AES. Haven't had a chance to go through it yet, but thought I'd start up a discussion. Edit: Had a chance to do a cursory read. The take-home seems to be: the studies that passed the author's muster combine to suggest an ability to discriminate high-resolution...- RRod

SoX 14.4.2 fork with basic DSD support
I happened upon this fork of SoX the other day, where someone has gone through the effort to add some basic DSD compatibility: https://github.com/mansr/sox There's also an AUR repository available: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/sox-dsd-git/ I haven't tried PCM→DSD yet, but DSD→PCM...- RRod

Any way to fix this?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwmVtb5IwniEOUdZV3Fxb3BVa2M/view?usp=sharing Drives me mad because otherwise it's a great sounding track, and a fun piece. I tried hacking with Audacity's repair tool at obvious bad samples / spectrogram regions, but nothing really convincing came out. Any...- RRod

Magnum Opus?
Any of you guys use Opus? I just tested out some tracks at 128 vbr and I was like They've really improved this stuff dramatically. Going to have to take some time to ABX how low I can go on this, so I guess it will be a day of harpsichords and castanets pretty soon.- RRod

Comparing recordings
Any of you fine gents know of any software/plugin that lets you switch between different recordings in a semi-synched way? That is, say I have 3 recordings of a particular symphonic movement I want to compare; I'm looking for software that would let me switch between so that I end up in the same...- RRod

5.1 + HRTF
I've been playing around with a couple of HRTF databases (IRCAM and CIPIC) to try and get some movie/music 5.1 files into a semi-believable virtual headphone surround. So far I haven't been impressed with the results. Is there a principled way of going about this? So far I've been using...- RRod

Preparing for the inevitable: DAP recommendation
I'm preparing for the inevitable death of my iPod Classic, so I figured it's a good time to look into DAPs. I'm looking for something with the following features; any suggestions (phone suggestions are welcome too)? Capacity: > 128G Output impedance: < 3ohm Output power: 30+mW @ 32ohm...- RRod

RMAA in Wine
I decided to give RMAA a shot and loaded it up in Wine1.7 on Ubuntu 14.04. Here are my results at 24/44.1 for my sound-card loopback. They seem a bit too good… https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwmVtb5IwniEOWVIYk5VaG9XZlU/view?usp=sharing Anyone use this program in Wine and know settings...- RRod

It's not the D, it's the A that will kill you...
A common argument I see for audible differences in DACs goes something like: "though the differences in DAC chips should be negligible, the differences in the analog stage after the chip can become audible." So a couple of questions for people who know design of these things: 1) What...- RRod

Metal Moments in Classical Music
Ever listen to a piece of classical music and think "man, this is pretty metal?" Well if you have, list the track here so we can all mosh in the opera pit. Tracks that come to mind off the cuff: Haydn: Cello Concerto №1, 1st movement: great grinding riffs Shostakovich: String Quartet №10... -
Matchmaker, matchmaker…
Does anyone know of any software or incantation that will automagically process two masterings of the same track to make them comparable in an ABX test? Mainly I'm having issues with alignment, especially as it seems there are subtle differences in playback speed that can occur (i.e. if I align...- RRod

Whence 48k?
Why exactly did the powers that be decide on 48kHz as the sampling rate for DVD format? Was that extra slightly-less-than-a-whole-tone really that useful on the user's end?- RRod

Noise job
So I've been using DeaDBeeF as my audio player in Linux with much delight, and I've gotten somewhat of a kick out of watching spectrograms. So here's one I just saw (done up nice in sox): Is there some kind of commonly used shaping that manifests itself like this, or is this something else...- RRod

Hi-res cymbal sample
Any of you fine people have a link to any 88/96/176/192 cymbal samples? I'm continuing to compile my list of «problems that don't exist» with 44.1/16 playback.- RRod

Shattering my ears into 16 bits
With the Ponostore (poh-nah-stoh-ree?) looming as a source of HD material, I've been doing as much fiddling with filters and test files as I know how to verify what I can hear. At this point, I think I've verified that nothing on this green Earth will let me benefit from >16kHz frequencies. With...- RRod
