Iems do fine without amplification, but for headphones I think that Grados are the only good headphone that approach their full potential without amplification. In your price range, SR225. Forget closed headphones unless you need to stop sound leakage, they all suffer in sound quality imo.

I think that you may be right. I a/b tested the HE-500 against RS-1, HD 600, edition 8 and D7000, and the HE-500 *murdered* those headphones in terms of balance, sound quality and sheer enjoyment. No comparison.
