Is the Icon 2 enough for HD600s?
I am considering a Nuforce Icon 2 for its flexibility as a DAC, integrated, and headphone amp. However I am concerned that the unit will not have sufficient output to drive the HD600s adequately. Has anyone used an Icon or Icon 2 with the HD600s? What were your results?- peter braun

Help Me Sort Out My Computer Rig Options
I am looking to setup a computer based hifi rig with flexibility for both 2 channel speakers and headphones. The budget is $500-600 and I already have the headphones (Sennheiser HD600s). Here are the two setups I am considering- Nuforce Icon 2 with Audioengine P4 or Nuforce...- peter braun

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
Glad to see a thread with a focus on vintage gear. My audiophile interests began with headphone related products but gravitated to vintage equipment over the last several years. I have owned various receivers, pre/amps, integrateds, tuners, reel to reels, speakers, and turntables from Accuphase...- peter braun

Nuforce Icon 2 versus HDP - Any differences?
I understand there are functional differences between these two models - one has two channel output for speakers and the other can be used as a pre-amp. Any differences in the quality of the DACs between the two units? How about as headphone amps? It seems on the surface that the HDP is a Icon 2...- peter braun

Alternative to Nuforce Icon 2
Well in the next two weeks or so I am going to begin putting together a desktop hifi rig. With my main 2-channel setup in storage, this will be my primary source of music and I forsee duties being split 50/50 between speakers and headphones. Thus far I am leaning stronging toward a Nuforce Icon...- peter braun

Bringing Myself into the 21st Century - Setting Up a Computer Based Audio System
Greetings everyone, I have been a long time member but have been out of hifi for a while after having had a busy few years (career, marriage, kids, etc...). cheap amp for speakers
I prefer the vintage Sansui and Kenwood receivers or integrated amps. Any of the G series Sansui receivers would make a good choice as well as the 6600, 7600, 9600 Kenwood receivers. What is your price range? The Marantz receivers have superb build quality but will be a bit more expensive than... -
Diana Krall: Look of Love - Weird Sonics?
Anyone else noticed that the piano solo at approx. two and a half minutes into the first track sounds really bad? Like in a recessed and even distorted sort of way? I am hoping it is not my cdp, but every other component of the song sounds fine as do other cds. I also noticed the same phenomenon...- peter braun

Respectable Stereo Tuner Amp?
Quote: Didn't Adcom make a tuner-pre at one time? Yes, the GTP-450 and 500. Both can be had for well under your price range. If you do not mind vintage equipment, I would suggest a older receiver or integrated amp from Sansui, Kenwood, or Pioneer. McIntosh also made a number of...- peter braun

best vintage brands?
Anything under $500 is a very good price for a E-202. Very clean amp with guts, combined with build quality up there with the best being made today. With the vintage equipment you also get a lot extra features that the minimalistic amps currently being offered will not give you. MM phono stages... -
best vintage brands?
For amps - McIntosh (receivers 1900 and 4100 are the best values, also look for integrated amps 6100 and 6200) Sansui (not quite the same level as Mac, but less expensive while still providing excellant performance for the money) - look for AU-717, AU-719, AU-919, AU-9900 integrated amps... -
$500 bookshelfs - Paradigm, JM Labs, Wharfedale, NHT - I need help.
I would suggest looking for two way pair of ADS' from the early 80s. Models such as the 570s can be found reguraly for around $100-150 on ebay. Their only downside is they are a little larger than the average bookshelf. I love mine and prefer them to any of the > $500 monitors I have heard... -

Going to demo a used Thorens TD160 mkII...
The TD-160 is indeed a good entry point into vinyl. As mentioned above the weak point is typically the stock Thorens arm, but that has been addressed in the unit you are considering. I currently use a TD-160B Mk. II with a Rega RB250 arm. The piece is really well made and very quiet. I would...- peter braun

Entry HT Projectors: Worth Checking Into?
Infocus is currently offering a special on their entry HT projector- http://www.infocus.com/ms/outlet/ind...mc_id=fol_0000 This seems to be a smoking deal but are the entry level projector units worth investing in? The use would be movies and a little TV, the room is large enough to house...- peter braun

speaker amp needed
I also would suggest a vintage receiver or integrated amp. I believe that the Marantz are sort overpriced as far as vintage equipment goes, so look for Sansui, Pioneer, or Kenwood gear from the 1970s. My recommendations would be - Sansui AU-517 or AU-717 integrated amps Sansui G-7000...- peter braun

budget vintage preamps w/phono?
The Adcom GFP-565 (such as the one below) was supposed to have a terrific phono stage and now can be currently purchased used in the $250-300 range. The model was Adcom's top of the line pre in the earl 90s and a real giant killer during the period... -

Tube CD player recommendations?
I have to strongly disagree with the comments on the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000. I have owned mine for 2.5 years now and never had any reliability problems with the unit. Never skipped, failed to read a cd, nothing of the sort. In addition, though I tend to prefer my equipment on the warm side, the Ah...- peter braun
