Rafe's Inner Fidelity
Don't worry the site is dead.... Traffic rank has dropped from 60-70K to 113K. I can't imagine that management is happy about this, but am perplexed as to why they let Rafe kill the site. It had a well known formula, and changing that formula all of a sudden certainly wasn't going to retain...- prescient

Sennheiser HD820
The NAD HP50 which incorporates room feel has doesn't have a frequency response rise/dip anywhere near as severe. There is a little up/down blip below 100K but overall it has a smooth response that is down about -4db from 200hz to 300hz. There aren't any 12db swings in that area of the FR...- prescient

How a headphone should measure has high correlation to how it sounds good to most people. That is exactly how they came up with the target curves.- prescient

Sennheiser HD820
I find it odd that some people are defending the FR on this headphone. A -12db swing from 200hz to 300hz doesn't look like any target curve I've ever seen. If anything I'd expect the FR to be moving in the other direction. This is a flawed headphone, and rationalizing this headphone's response...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
pinnahertz thanks for the replies. With respect to the ringing the reason I asked is that I had seen people on message boards indicate it was a potential issue, but I've never noticed it as I suspect my room is a much larger issue. I am interested in understanding the potential downsides of the...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
If we could step away from the ultrasonic debate for a bit I have what is probably an easier question to answer. I often hear that different kinds of filters used to equalize speakers (FIR perhaps?) have the potential to introduce ringing. Can anyone explain to me why the ringing occurs and how...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Ultrasonics.. I can't hear anything above 17K near as I can tell. Apparently my dog has no issues as the test tones sparked her interest and/or annoyance. At least I know it is making noise up there!- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Thanks for posting that turntable. That thing is pretty cool. They aren't even that expensive on ebay. I'm not into vinyl, but that might be a fun toy. I know B&O is a lifestyle brand, but they are seriously forward thinking on some stuff. I applaud them for their judicious use of DSP and...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
A few thoughts. First, you can listen to the diff file. If you listen to it and you have to crank your stereo to hear the diff it may be safe to assume that it is noise. Another idea would be to use a metric that doesn't have a breakdown point of 1. For example, you could look at the median or...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
More along these lines. If i'm using the software I need to know where the cutoff is to determine whether there is an audible difference between two components. If the correlated null depth between flac and 320kbps mp3 is 70db and I consider that barely audible then perhaps I should only worry...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
I've always thought that AudioDiffMaker was a neat idea if you wanted to take the human element out of the analysis but weren't content to test with frequency sweeps. It's old and a bit fussy apparently, but the analysis is intuitive. It appears to be very good at identifying differences in...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
This is interesting. I feel like I can better hear details at my dealer’s room and sometimes on my home monitors (Genelec) than my headphones. I’ve had some ok headphones (lcd-3, esp 950, se535, w40s, hd580, etc.) typically using Oppo HA-1 as a source. If the answer is that I’d need to step up...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Mostly agree with the above. Your amp needs to have reasonable output impedance, but you can get that with an SMSL Idea for ~$80. If you look at some headphones like Campfire Audio's Andromeda you can see that output impedance does impact the frequency response. On topic, to some extent I think...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Interestingly (maybe not) I had to use XLRs for my home workstation. I always have 3+ PC's running for a number of reasons, and when I tried to run RCAs to my monitors under my desk (~3ft) I couldn't get rid of a hum. I suspect the hum was an artifact of the myriad of electronics and cords all...- prescient

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Can someone explain why high end speakers don't use something like SpeakOn connectors? I'm not that familiar with them, but looking at them it seems you just plug them in and twist and then they lock? That makes way more sense to me versus spades or banana plugs. What am I missing here? I'd...- prescient

The DSP Rolling & How-To Thread
A few thoughts on the miniDSP boxes as people seem to have interesting views on these. I have the ddrc-88a it would be difficult to have a software solution that works as well and as simply as this box if you have a large number of input devices. Many people are using these boxes in their home...- prescient

Audeze LCD-4 Amp recommendations?
The LCD 4 is specced at 97dB/1mW with optimal power between 1-4W. The OPPO HA-1 should have no trouble driving the LCD-4 with balanced output at 2W into 32ohms and 800mW into 600 ohms with peaks of 3W and 2.4W respectively. In contrast the HP4 is specced at 600mW. Unless I'm missing something...- prescient

Relatively cheap headphone measuring kit?
If you want to put in the effort I suspect some audio processing in Matlab or equivalent could probably make it pretty easy to shift EQ by loudness contour. A very layman's perspective, but I'm thinking you setup your EQ at one Fletcher Munson curve volume. As you change volume in the digital...- prescient

Relatively cheap headphone measuring kit?
Samsung phones have something similar built in (adapt sound). Instead of asking for the people to evaluate equal volume the app asks you to indicate whether you can hear the tone or not. I suspect this is probably a better approach as it is a binary evaluation of the noise. Edit: NM i forgot...- prescient

Audeze LCD-4 Amp recommendations?
I have the LCD-3 with the Oppo HA-1. I highly recommend the combo. The Oppo HA-1 is tough to beat as it is class A, and has a wide array of functionality. I use my iPad as source quite a bit with the Camera Connection Kit which allows for bit perfect input. Additionally, I love that I can use...- prescient
