Campfire Audio Vega (and Dorado and Lyra II) - Head-Fi TV
Nice to hear another Head-fier sharing the same sentiments of the Lyra 2. I own a few decent full size headphones but the Lyra 2s were my first big spend on IEMs and I wanted something like the IE800 but more natural sounding and good for long listening sessions. They did just that for me and...- wahsmoh

NOS DAC-AMP Combo - Metrum Amethyst
I own an Amethyst and I am still enjoying it. I think there is something to be said about the depth of soundstage with NOS DACs such as Amethyst. With headphones on, it doesn't sound as deep front to back like my oversampling Theta Digital DAC as some people have said, but it is a very wide...- wahsmoh

DENAFRIPS 'ARES' R2R discrete ladder DAC - close up view
Just got in the Amethyst today. It's been trading blows back and forth with my Theta Digital DS Pro progeny A and the Chord Mojo. Better overall than both, although the Theta Digital DAC has a unique slam and dynamic contrast that is unlike either. The Amethyst is more neutral than the old Theta...- wahsmoh

NOS DAC-AMP Combo - Metrum Amethyst
I decided to take the plunge. Have never heard a NOS ladder DAC but I decided the Gumby is too similar sounding to my Theta Digital DAC (also a little dryer and brighter) so I didn't feel that it was worth buying especially if my whole system is single ended. I wont be back in my hometown until...- wahsmoh

Metrum Acoustics Menuet DAC
Looks like Menuet is getting phased out for another line of products. I may have to look at the Jade or Amethyst DAC coming out soon. Thanks for the heads up!! I am sure Metrum will fill the gap for an awesome DAC at a price point lower than the Pavane. I will wait and see.- wahsmoh

Metrum Acoustics Menuet DAC
I have been living comfortably with an old Theta Digital DS Pro progeny A. This DAC only boasts 108 dB of dynamic range.. fairly close to the Gumby in measured performance. Albeit a completely different beast.. less neutral more warm with unbelievable dynamics and slam factor.. treble never...- wahsmoh

Campfire Audio Vega (and Dorado and Lyra II) - Head-Fi TV
I hardly ever make posts on Head-fi anymore. The Lyra 2s are friggin amazing with the Mojo/Fiio X5II stack I am pairing with them. I moved on to the speaker world I now have a system based on Ascend Sierra 2s and two 15 inch Rythmik subs. But now I am travelling the Lyra 2s have been a blessing...- wahsmoh

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)
I will try that soon. I don't have an A/B switcher so it might be hard to do a true comparison. I am just stating that there is something seriously wrong with the Bimby when playing video games. The locations of sounds sound like they are reversed and I have checked my RCA cables and they are...- wahsmoh

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)
Vintage CD players can still produce some convincing sound. I have an old EAD CD-1000 mk3 that is collecting some dust but I might put it back into my stereo system when I get a bigger audio rack. It has two PCM63P-k DAC chips and a large R-core transformer and fully balanced through the digital...- wahsmoh

Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review
Hmmm.. I really want to try the TH900 driver transplant into the THX00. That is the only thing aside from the cups, pads, and foam that sets them apart from each other. But.. Denon AHD-7200?? Is this the holy grail headphone we have been waiting for? Basically a more luxurious D7000/THX00...- wahsmoh

Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review
Thanks for your impressions! Now that the cups are available from EMU directly I may have to give it a whirl. One of the things I like about the TH-X00s in mahogony configuration with lambskin pads is that they have a good frequency response and I can take off my headphones and listen to my...- wahsmoh

MrSpeakers ETHER C Review / Announcement - A New Closed-Back Planar Magnetic Flagship from MrSpeakers
Glad to see there are more happy Ether C owners. I am still debating on whether an Ether C, C Flow, or Flow are right for me. The only way to find out is to give them all a listen in a quiet environment. I moved on to speakers for the time being. The latest headphone developments all cost...- wahsmoh

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up
Nice! I am sure this has been discussed many times, but I wish anodized black came as a standard Schiit option. I may have to wait till I see a black B-stock Freya which may never happen if Schiit has streamlined production and QC to such a high degree now.- wahsmoh

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up
Okay so Jotunheim was kind of cool. I want a full size preamp/phono stage thingy though. I mean the Jotunheim is great for a smaller setup.. but now I expect something in the Mjolnir/Gungnir chassis that is also a preamp. Would be nice to have a killer preamp in a world of overpriced crap. The...- wahsmoh

5th Annual San Diego Head-Fi Meet: Saturday, December 3rd, 2016
I will be there again this year!! I think that is three San Diego meets in a row now for me?? Anyways, I stopped listening to headphones as much as I used to. I just got an old Adcom GFA-555 (Nelson Pass designed) and paired it up to some Ascend Sierra 2's and I have finally found a pairing...- wahsmoh

Sennheiser HD800S Unveiled!
You can never be too generous with bubble wrap. The pawn shop on eBay that sold me my Theta DS Pro progeny version A must have used 15 feet of bubble wrap to package my DAC. But when my box arrived the damned thing was nearly busted. Every corner on the cardboard box had been roughed up and...- wahsmoh

Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review
I feel like the TH-X00 keeps a better pace with the music though. i.e. it sounds "faster". Maybe this could be because I lean towards the DT880-type presentation wtih the caveat that the HD600 has a better midrange and sounds more open than the semi-open DT880. I also think the HD600 has a more...- wahsmoh

Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review
Does anyone else like their TH-X00 more than the HD600? I feel like after listening to them side by side, the TH-X00 has a much better bass and also sounds less "veiled". I mean like the HD600's vocals sound great but a little bit stuffy like there is a thin sheet of paper separating me from the...- wahsmoh

Schiit Fire and Save Matches! Bifrost Multibit is Here.
I agree though with DecentLevi that the Bimby doesn't have as strong of dynamics or the explosive transients as the Gumby. I noticed this when comparing my Theta DS Pro progeny v. A to the Bimby. The Theta uses that mystical "burrito filter" time and frequency domain algorithm that makes...- wahsmoh

Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review
Yes! I wonder what this will do for the value of early Mahogany headhones. I have serial #274.. and not many QC issues except the stain is a little bit lighter around some of the edges of the cups than it should be like brush strokes but only noticeable when looking very close. Also the...- wahsmoh
