Pen-Fi (FPs, RBs, BPs, etc...) [56k Warning]
This might seem blatantly obvious, though I'd like to remind readers to clean their fps. I use Diamine's registrar ink on my Pelikan and got lazy on my previous cleanup(s). I'm not sure how it is with other ink types (since I've only used this one) but given time the iron-gall will form a...- Akabeth

Any old fart head-fi'ers still around?
Quote: Sorry to hear that and I hope you'll fix that ear completely! I'd probably be quite upset if this happened to me since I look for detail and precision regardless of available setup. Quote: Aye, I find the viral marketing thing hideous. Fortunately I didn't get to...- Akabeth

The Hobbit Movie Thread (and anything else related to Lord of the Rings & J.R.R. Tolkien)
...when dialogues take place it's done using formal English, reflecting the serious nature of these stories. Apparently going the Tolkien route* is still seen as a big [financial] risk even after all these years. 'Tis a sad situation... Still, there are definitely characters and sights I'd...- Akabeth

The Hobbit Movie Thread (and anything else related to Lord of the Rings & J.R.R. Tolkien)
Just wanted to take a detour from The Hobbit films. For me, this is probably the most enjoyable part of the behind-the-scenes feature from LoTR. Reading the trilogy actually made me appreciate [even more] the film making character realization process. And it certainly helps that Gollum's...- Akabeth

How many headphones are too many?
I think anything above two headphones can be considered too many. One earbud to lug around plus a good headphone or IEM for your full setup. Anything more, you better have some specific genre in mind or at least good recordings to back it up. But that's just my opinion. If you're a...- Akabeth

The Hobbit Movie Thread (and anything else related to Lord of the Rings & J.R.R. Tolkien)
I watched the second movie last night. When I got home, family asked how the movie was and it took me what felt like minutes to produce a reaction. Anyway just one more to go. Hopefully they'll get more Tolkien in and less of Michael Bay. p.s. Srsly why the [...] is Tauriel even in there?- Akabeth

What do you consider yourself? An audio enthusiast, or an audiophile?
I've kept this stuff mostly to myself so I don't think I've ever been called anything specific (nor have I ever cared to assign myself into one). Now I just listen to music wherever and however I find them... So I guess in many ways I think I've went around the circle with this music...- Akabeth

Selling to members with zero feedback and posts?
Well there are always risks with online trading and you're talking about two different stages here. From my experience both should be context specific like customer location (are they overseas?) and obviously the amount of money involved. I'd say as item value goes up, buyer and seller...- Akabeth

The Hobbit Movie Thread (and anything else related to Lord of the Rings & J.R.R. Tolkien)
Right on. Different readers will render different aspects of the book differently, though I think it becomes more troublesome when filmmakers deal with more intricate worlds (which is true for Tolkien). I know last year it was rather difficult for me to watch The Hobbit the second time...- Akabeth

Sony MDR-R10 Owner's Club
Damn 36 bids @ US $4250 on a zero rating seller out of eBay? Still not even at the sniping phase yet. --- lol two late snipes concluded the auction with 41 bids @ US $5151. That's a lot of faith, if you know what I mean.- Akabeth

What is the Future of the High-End Part VI: Can't We All Just Get Along?
Wow, I didn't know this sort of discussion was taking place at head-fi. I watched the youtube clip followed by the pf articles... and a few thoughts came to mind, so I'll try to distill it down into a post. I think Mr. Pearson [and you too Mike] were hitting the mark explaining how...- Akabeth

Lets Talk Metal
Not sure if this band belongs squarely in the metal (or even rock) genre but gosh... 2001 SOAD could sing and play some amazing music. This is probably the best live performance I've ever seen from them. -
Question: Buying first set of 'quality' headphones
Honestly, it sounds like you need a workhorse of a headphone. If you're going to lug and run with this thing, I'd suggest buying a decent isolation earbud and some USB DAC. I'm actually using older variant of the item below while on my laptop. ...- Akabeth

The Hobbit Movie Thread (and anything else related to Lord of the Rings & J.R.R. Tolkien)
***cleaning this post up*** It appears that this film trilogy is very much an action oriented interpretation of the book. Nevermind the script, the general feel and pacing of the former hardly resembles the latter. This was true for the first film, even more so for the second, and probably...- Akabeth

Writing my first headphone review on Head-Fi...
Like others have stated, comparisons and choosing well known albums always helps. As for its length, it depends on what you what to do with it. You could be extremely thorough or be critical on certain aspects like construction (lots of reviews floating around the internet). For forum...- Akabeth
