Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements
Sold my 58X a few weeks ago. Just couldn't get enough treble out of it, even with the front foam completely removed. I listen to classical/orchestral exclusively, a genre that seems to require a lot more treble than Sennheiser are prepared to supply. (Just type in "Best headphones for Classical"...- pp312

Beyer DT990 Pro vs. Premium.
Yes, that's great work and clears up my confusion. I've of course not opened either phone, so could only judge from the outside. Given the (great) pictures I would describe both phones as semi-open at best, though they certainly sound fully open. Interesting that Beyer call the 880 semi-open but...- pp312

Beyer DT990 Pro vs. Premium.
Appreciate what you're saying, Dunring, but in fact the major difference between these phones is that the Pro is open and the Premium closed. This is easily confirmed when you have both. The Premium has a completely closed back, though without a close inspection you might think it has slit...- pp312

Beyer DT990 Pro vs. Premium.
I have both these and cannot say there's a huge difference, but there is a difference. Not surprising really since the Pro is almost wholly open where the Premium is wholly closed. Beyer are quite coy about this and only say that they use the same drivers and therefore must sound the same, but...- pp312

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements
Yes, that's where I usually hear things. :) But seriously, I know it isn't. I couldn't get on with these phones at first. Something wasn't right--too little treble for me, lack of spaciousness...just general disappointment. I tried removing the front foam but that made them a little bright and...- pp312

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements
Probably not a huge compliment given they're only $150. And you're only saying "one of" not "the" best. :) Incidentally, not sure what the current thinking is on removing the back foam. I read a lot of posts way back that it made no difference and measured the same, so I left it. Then...- pp312

Philips SHP9500 burn in?
Out of all the reviews of this popular phone there's hardly a word said about burn in. Trawling through Amazon, a couple of people maintain it's not necessary, but one user, who seemed to know what he was talking about, warns against judging this phone without at least a few days intense burn...- pp312

Weird Sennheiser HD598/Marantz PM5005 mismatch.
Based on my fondness for an old pair of Sennheiser HD595s, which I was using with a Marantz PM5005 integrated, I decided to buy an HD598. First thing I noticed was an incredibly boomy mid-bass--almost unlistenable. This had me stumped, as it wasn't apparent at all with the 595. Finally I decided...- pp312

Marantz PM-5005
Had a little look inside but can't really follow the signal due to the twisting of the wires into bundles. Can't see anything resembling a separate amp, and there isn't anything printed on the board about an HP amp. My guess is that it's the same as every other Marantz amp in taking the signal...- pp312

Marantz PM-5005
Actually that's yet another question. I've had Marantz amps for many years (more than I care to count) and it's always been that the HP out is taken from the speaker taps. Yet Marantz speaks about the 5005 as if it had a separate HP amp: "PM5005 features a headphone amplifier that is able to...- pp312

Marantz PM-5005
Just wanted to ask a probably unanswerable question. I use a PM5005 with Beyer T90 phones and find the sound great. Yet when I read reviews of the amp on places like Amazon and Crutchfield there seems to be a general consensus that the headphone sound is poor. This crops up frequently, even from...- pp312

Beyerdynamic T90 Discussion and Support Thread
My impression is that the T90 reproduces light and shadow where appropriate whereas the T1 is in full sunlight all the time, so that I feel like I need aural sunglasses. In short, I just found the T1 too bright, and not realistic. I don't hear the T90 as 'fun' sounding, just accurate. Though...- pp312

Beyerdynamic T90 Discussion and Support Thread
This is typical Beyer problem with no universal solution. It also afflicts the DT880 and--I presume--the DT990. My response with the DT880 was to drill through the middle of the plastic where it clamps the band and insert a small flat end screw to stop the sliding. Others try things like tape...- pp312
