Hey mate, unfortunately I still to this day really do not understand how to appraise amps and headphones from a technical standpoint. In terms of which one you might want, if you need to boost bass, then I'd say the e12. But if portability is no issue, and clarity and soundstage are priorities...

Y Yer I own the x7 with the am1 for my iems. If I use my q701s it through the k5 dock. But I was thinking how I'd like to make them a little more portable around the house, so perhaps getting the am5 module. Thanks heaps for the advice

It's portable, but keep it plugged in and it will stay charged (connected to the computer or a power point)

If you do end up needing extra juice, a step up FiiO wise to the e12 most definitely gets the job done (personal experience)

I can't compare between the two headphones, but I own the q701s paired with the FiiO k5 and the sound stage is incredible. I have also paired it with the FiiOe12, which was a good pairing, especially to squeeze a little extra bass out them using the bass-booster switch/setting.
