    Android phones and USB DACs

Just flashed the stock 5.0 factory image on my Nexus 5, and my old Icon Mobile is working beautifully with OTG cable.  So the promised USB audio support in 5.0 seems good as advertised to me.   Also, Lollipop is pretty damn sexy.   EDIT: Having the DAC plugged in makes a very noticeable dent...

    Heavy Classical Music

I would argue this would give your nominations a good fight.

    Can't find a Brahms 2nd Sym I like

The slow movement of the 2nd is one of my favorite symphonic slow movements in the repertoire.   My two favorites are: Furtwangler (1945)   Max Fiedler (1931)   Listening to Fiedler, I get the sense that this is how the piece should be performed, but Furtwangler is, as usual...

Bargain Alert: 100 CD Classical live concerts set $55 shipped!

This is actually the first mega-box that I've been tempted to grab... Edwin Fischer, Backhaus in Beethoven? Menuhin's Elgar and the Rostropovich/Talich Dvorak? Dennis Brain's Mozart? Some of these recordings have a claim to the best ever despite being 50 years old.

    Music that makes you cry?

Another classical rec: Strauss' Four Last Songs. Literally the final pieces composed by Richard (not Johann the waltz-man) Strauss at age 84 and premiered after his death, they deal with acceptance of death and feature gorgeous soprano lines over lush orchestral accompaniment. Absolutely...

Where to get music with limited dynamic range compression?

Every so often, I hear classical music listeners complaining that there's TOO much dynamic range... "I keep on having the turn the volume up in the soft parts, and then back down in the loud parts."  With good sound and a nice quiet listening environment, though, the range can really be stunning

Beethoven String Quartets 11 & 15, and "Die Moldau"

I haven't heard the Ancerl, but the Talich is indeed very very good. Another favorite of mine is Fricsay... there's a Youtube video of him rehearsing it : http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fricsay&search=Search

Digital Restoration of 78s (links updated 7/22)

Comparing this to my Opus Kura transfer of the Mahler, it's immediately noticeable how much more noise reduction you've been able to achieve... and yet the orchestral sound doesn't suffer as a result. Remarkable!   How long does restoring one of these take? Any plans for doing any more? The...

    Jussi Björling

The 1956 recording of Puccini's La Boheme with Bjorling, Victoria de los Angeles and Thomas Beecham is one of the most magical opera recordings of all time. A decent number of fans still consider this THE definitive recording of La Boheme despite it being more than 50 years old.

    Bach's Best Recordings & Amazon's 9 hours of MP3's for 99 cents Birthday Celebration! (Post 14)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g5Q1p6C7ho   I'm totally kidding, that's terrible.   Most of my favorites are the usual classics: Casals' Cello Suites Szigeti's Sonatas and Partitas Gould's Goldberg Variations Fischer's WTC

Where do you buy your legal lossless classical music files?

Has anybody bought anything off of pristineclassical.com? The website offers remastered historic recordings at up to 24bit flac, and some of the recordings available are truly classics, but I'm really wondering whether, for recordings from the 30s and 40s, the extra quality offered by lossless...

Getting "called-out" for not wearing the Beats

Saw a guy on the street sitting in a wheelchair holding out a cup and asking for change while wearing a pair of Beats. Wasn't too sure what to think about that...

    Classical music recommendations for newbie

More eprops for the viola. Kim Kashkashian in particular is fantastic, almost everything she does she pulls off great. I'm a particular fan of the Elegies album, especially the Vaughan Williams and the Kodaly.   More excellent and relatively easy to get into chamber pieces: Beethoven...
