If the phono amp and the preamp both have ground connected power cords that may be the cause. try plogging both power cords in to the same power outlet, if they aren't all ready.

Sounds to me like you have a ground loop issue.

I believe your test was successful in that it eliminated confirmation bias as a variable. My opinion is confirmation bias is one of the biggest factors in audio preferences.

If I remember correctly, there are a three Phillips screws under the foam covering the drivers. I was able to squish the earpad aside enough to get a scew driver into the screws by poking it through the foam. The screws are recessed into indents in the plastic. That was several years ago. Maybe...

I think it's a interesting idea. You might have to post atutorial on how to make the measurement and calculate the output impedance.
