Just replying to these to say y'all did good. My R70X arrived last night and I love it! Thanks so much!

Thanks for all of the replies so far! Someone elsewhere recommended me a used Ananda, and another recommended me the K612 Pro. What are the thoughts on that?

That's preferable for <$300? I owned a K701 and K7XX before and didn't like them. Bass was too receded, highs were a bit shrill/fatiguing, and the soundstage seemed over-exaggerated.

I have the Sennheiser HD660S and the AKG K371 already. I like the mids on the Sennheiser... but I just can't stand the Sennheiser veil. I'm willing to get something with slightly inferior mids if it means getting something with a more neutral sound signature. I'd prefer moderately good...

Looking for a good amp setup under $1000.

I own an Atom stack and that's pretty much it. I'd like something higher end to power my HD660S, as well as give me more upgrade options. I'd prefer an all-in-one unit like Jotunheim. I'd like a neutral sound signature and better separation and detail than my Atom stack. Any suggestion or ideas...

I own the Atom stack and like it. Now, I want a more fun amp+DAC setup < $300.

I've been listening to this for a few months now. I like how it doesn't color the audio at all. Powering my headphones, it's very unbiased. Now, I'd like something that's going to make the highs sparkle a bit and make the bass sound more punchy and tight. Objectivity and measurements be damned...

Need some good open or semi-open for mids for <$120

I'm not going to be buying this for a while. I've got an HD660S coming in the mail soon! However, I'm going to have days where I don't feel like doing critical listening. Those days where you just feel like kicking your shoes off and listening to your favorite songs and not worry about...

I need an introductory, non-shouty <$200 open or semi-open set to run off of my Atom stack

No experience with planars yet. I'd like to stick with non planar for the time being. I might be able to extend towards the HD6XX, although another person mentioned the HD560s.

I need an introductory, non-shouty <$200 open or semi-open set to run off of my Atom stack

I am currently running an AKG K371 off of this Atom stack. I find it to be harsh and shouty in many songs, in a way that causes a lot of fatigue. I also own a Takstar Pro 80 which does not have this problem. The mids are a tad flat in this headset, but comboing it with the Atom stack is fatigue...

The idea is to use it for Blu-Ray and Wii U. I'm not going to be using it at all for broadcast TV.

Okay, two more questions. Is there a good HDTV receiver that is economical that people recommend that performs virtual surround? And does virtual 7.1 give any better accuracy than virtual 5.1?

Just want to say thanks for this detailed, thought out reply. I was confused on so many things. I was hoping I could get something like a discrete DAC and audio processor to encode PCM 7.1 or 5.1 into a headphone surround technology, then send it to an amp via line out. The Wii U has 5.1, but...

I'm asking, what's the point of the X7 having support for something that it can't use besides converting it into basic stereo? Is there any situation where a 2.0 audio track wouldn't be available? It'd be like having a Blu-Ray player that supported Blu-Ray 3D disks, but the only thing it could...

On this again, are you sure? If so, what is the point of the Sound Blaster X7 being able to decode Dolby Digital 5.1?
