Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

If you ask the TH900 thread this question the answer is yes it is the best.

If you asked on the Z1R thread is "Z1R best closed back", the answer is yes it is the best.

Depends on which thread you ask.
Vut both can be "best" for different reasons.

but but... that's what semi closed does. A bit leaking. I have both th600 and th900 (my housemate). The leaking is obvious. Unfortunately, we still dont have z1r hahhaa. But from what i read, z1r does not leak much

does the th900 look semi-closed or closed to you? do you see any mesh on the ear-cups like the t1 for example, which is commonly referred to as semi-open? no, what you see are solid wood ear-cups without obvious holes or openings in them. the fact that it leaks sound and lets sound in just means that it doesn't isolate as well as some other closed cans, but that doesn't make it semi-closed or semi-open. it's a closed can.

Is th900 the best close back or is there something out there better.

Yes, the Sony MDR-R10 (the bass heavy version, imho).

Depending on what you want, select yourself something from this list:
- Sony Z1R: less colored, less sub-bass emphasis, more mid-bass emphasis (too thick imho), better mids, better highs
- Fostex TH900: in modded form, my preferred closed can this side of the R10, beats Z1R in mids as well, but still very colored
- Denon D7000: softer, smoother and more musical than the TH900
- Denon D7200: in stock form, the most linear closed can, but smaller sound stage, and feels more limited in the bottom end. You don't miss any bass though, just bass emphasis.
Some comfort issues with the head band.
- Massdrop Fostex TX00EB (or other varieties): a tad more bass and more treble and larger sound stage than the D7200, otherwise similar.

The AKG K872 might play as well. I don't like the Audeze closed cans. I have not heard the MrSpeakers closed cans.

If you can't listen to all of these, and have money, get a Z1R.
If you don't have that money, get a TH900 or one of the others.
Watch the Aeon, perhaps your best bet.
IMHO and YMMV.

I would like to put the TH900 cups onto the frame of a Beyerdynamic. Can this be done ?

Seems you will go balanced.

What type of mods would you suggest to a beginner regarding the Fostex th900?

Maybe try various replacement pads (read back or search this forum or check the TH900 mods thread).

The only standard mods are the Lawton mods, I have tried Level 1 and the pads, and I didn't like them.
Maybe the full mod incl. the bigger wooden cups provides something. But IMHO the Urushi cups sound really good.

IMHO the best mod is to change the stuffing in the original Fostex pads to carbon foam - details in the mods thread.

Is there still a place that sells TH900 replacement drivers, I'm in dire need of two replacement drivers.

You can get them from Fostex. Ask your distributor. IIRC the cost was like 300 euros for the pair.
