I disagree. Vettel and Hamilton haven't had those cars each year. Some years yes but not every year. Yet they still manage to pull out wins and poles. Hamilton has at least 1 pole and 1 win for each of his 10 years in F1.

I think we sometimes make the mistake of thinking a car is more competitive when a great driver puts it on top.

The nuance is that he only wins WDC's when in a competitive car. He's definitely won races in the second best car.

2008 vs. Ferrari was a year when Macca and Ferrari kept swapping best car throughout the season. The Red Bull years had Hammy win some races in a car that loved to blow up with him in P1.

Given the right circumstances any driver can win (Kimi at Lotus) but that does not give us a true picture. Their is a vast difference between drivers who can win and drivers that do. It is why Ham and Vettel command the high salaries they do. Teams actually know what they are doing for the most part when selecting drivers and front runners rarely go with a bargain basement pilot who "can" win races in favour of the driver who will win races.

Grosjean, Magnussen, Kovaleinnen vs, Vettel, Verstappen, Ricciardo. The differences are very easy to spot.

As it stands now. It's Alonso for the title the SCUD for constructors with Perez as the runner up. Alonso in this years Ferrari would leave nothing on the track Kimi would be Kimi and Perez would show his full set of teeth. Massa is ever the perpetual team anchor and Vandoorne is still trying to figure it all out. No one has ever been able to get a vehicle off the line like Alonso and that would perpetually put the Merc's into chasing dirty air.

Supposedly the Pirellis are going to be a harder compound in Spain. If the weather turns cold with rain that may really play havoc with Merc's set up woes.

Definitely going to be a panic to get out front for the Merc boys. Depending on the qually positions that could become very interesting indeed.
