I use them from a Macbook Air and the Apple dongle for iPhone. I can hear slight differences but it's not like the iPhone can't drive them. Both require very low volume so apparently, both can drive them very easily. I would guess a better source would sound a bit better but it's not required...

Yes, that's exactly what happens with custom ear tips. The tip itself, which is maybe 2 cm long, "ends" some 1-2 mm outside of the ear canal. Only the nozzle of the IEM is "inside" the tip, so the tip of the nozzle is maybe 2 mm in the ear canal. As a result, the rest of the IEM is indeed...

Shure SE535 is well knows for being very mid centric. Also, I have the Massdrop Noble X and it seems quite mid centric, too (and according to the reviewers). Not saying it's the best option for you, but something to research and maybe a point of comparison :) .
