Did the HE-500 have any damping material between the grills and the back of the drivers? I have an older one which I bought used that the grill mesh has been removed from and there is nothing but a clear view of the back of the drivers. For example, my stock HE-6 has cotton damping material...

I use my HE-6 balanced through a Schitt Magnius. It has more than enough power to get uncomfortably loud, even with parametric EQ. 3.2W RMS per channel into 50 ohms. I used to use and still have an Emotiva mini-x that I would run off speaker taps. There is no difference in slam or anything...

Have you considered using some EQ? That would seem your least costly and likeliest option to please your tastes.

Something that would be interesting for you to try would be to setup a double blind listening test with your wife/girlfriend switching cables if you can. I think you'd be surprised.

I own both and I don't agree with you on all these points. To my ears the he6 is tonally brighter than the he500, so it's very possible that someone who enjoys the he500 may not pick the he6 over it. Hence my original suggestion to try before you buy.

The other thing to consider is that there is really nothing wrong with the he500. It's not going to be super easy to find something definitively better than them. You can find differently tuned cans, but I don't know that there is some obvious answer for you.

Just start with the volume at zero and move up slowly. Turn the volume back down before shutting the system off. If you do these two things you'll be fine

Just have a second person swap the cables, use the same cable covering/thickness, and wear a blindfold. Is it really that hard?

I'm still on the he500 which I prefer to the he6 for my tastes. Everyone has different preferences!
