Xiaomi Pistons 3.0 Impressions Thread
How do these compare to UE600? My dumb phone (LG G3) won't tolerate an sensitive/low impedance cans without horrible hissing and distortion and I don't really feel like getting yet another 100e pair of headphones just because. Also, is the isolation enough for walking around the town or...- SonicScientist

Decent amp or DAC to AKG K702
Objective Amp 2 and ODAC have similar performance and are better and cheaper available in Europe. Eg. O2's around 70e from head 'n' hifi and they can send them from Germany (albeit being a Swiss company), so no custom duties.- SonicScientist

Grado sr60e and sr80e.
Just how loud do you people listen to music? Grados can be used as a mini stereos yes, but at my normal listening levels, hearing anything but a small buzz at hand's length is just stretching it.- SonicScientist

Akg elements, Superlux body
So I found a pretty much destroyed pair of the old Akg k240 600Ohm. The drivers work fine, but the housings and the headband are finished. Has anyone implanted the drivers into e.g. Superlux or similar somewhat cheap headphones, or is it even possible?- SonicScientist

[Review] Brainwavz HM5, A New Neutral Champ
Are these really the only option? The headband itself costs around 80+e here. I'd be effectively doubling the value of my HM5. Looks like the originals are breaking left and right anyway, I can't understand why nobody sells spares.- SonicScientist

DIY Cable Questions and Comments Thread
Yep, the ground pin had snapped from the female jack in my diy-extension cord as it also works as stress reliever. I doubt I did any better jobs on other plugs either.- SonicScientist

Problem with a new cable
Yep, looks like the the end that you pinch around the cable to hold it tight and also works as the ground has snapped on my diy-extension. Incidentally a female jack was the only part for which I didn't get a spare. Solder seems to keep it in order for now, but I doubt it will hold long-term... -
DIY Cable Questions and Comments Thread
Hopefully this is a better place to ask a question. Copy paste from my failure of a thread: I hope this is the right place to ask, this forum isn't exactly fluid on a tablet. Anyway, I recabled Grado sr80 a while back with Canare star quad and a straight 3.5mm Amphenol plug. I'll fetch the...- SonicScientist

Problem with a new cable
I hope this is the right place to ask, this forum isn't exactly fluid on a tablet. Anyway, I recabled Grado sr80 a while back with Canare star quad and a straight 3.5mm Amphenol plug. I'll fetch the model numbers later if they're of importance, but they're the usual stuff recommended even here...- SonicScientist

Old pair of phones broke, need help deciding the successor
From AT it would be either of M50s, otherwise I'm just gonna regret my decision (as I did a few years back when I pondered between it and HM5). And that blue+tan version just looks so good. Does anyone have experience with K551, esp. how do tehy compare to UE? Found them for 85e.- SonicScientist

Old pair of phones broke, need help deciding the successor
Situation: Headband of my 2yo HM5 snapped and replacing it costs about the same as buying a new pair of cans, so why not? They are mainly for desktop usage, but if I the isolation is enough for long car and plane trips that's definitely a plus. So far I've been looking at these options and...- SonicScientist

Solved
NVXes should be pretty damn good for their price. Having fairly neutral sound signature (I have HM5, but sonically they should be the same) they don't have outstanding bass (not lacking, just balanced) straight out of the box, but they respond to equalization well.- SonicScientist

Suddenly the neutrality of HM5 sound so boring. Holy crap these sound good straight outta box. Hopefully AKG pads will be a bit more comfy tho.- SonicScientist

Earpads for Fischer Audio FA-006/Renkforce CD-340
My brother has 668B and the pads are almost as uncomfortable. I ordered some cheap velours from Ebay, those aren't seeing enough use anyway to justify 30e earpads.- SonicScientist

Earpads for Fischer Audio FA-006/Renkforce CD-340
I have cheap rebrands of FA-006 as my secondary pair of headphones and they have _really_ uncomfortable, hard faux-leather earpads. Apparently there is no spare pads sold so does anyone know if any other brands' earpads fit them? Beyerdynamic Dt-770/880/990 pads look like they might fit, but I...- SonicScientist

Alternative to the Sony MDR-V6 for producing.
Brainwavz HM5/Fischer Audio FA-003 maybe? They are pretty neutral at least for my ears and that was the consensus here few years back when I got them. These are re-brands of the same cans for dirt cheap (I think Fischer sold them for $300 and I paid 100e for my pair).- SonicScientist

Replacement for Philips Downtown for portable use, help me decide
As for big ones nothing really: Grados were my first real cans and I've had them for around 10 years. Got Hm5 2 years back when the cable broke and I didn't know if I could fix them. For portables I've had Porta Pros, Px100-2 and Jays V-Jays prior Downtowns. PPs were really good for their price...- SonicScientist

Replacement for Philips Downtown for portable use, help me decide
Apparently the right element of my cans blew on me and I need a new ones for everyday portable use: public transportation, walking around the town, visiting parents etc. I'd like to keep the budget sub-$100ish, but looking at the possibilities looks like I might have to go over it because where...- SonicScientist

The NEW JVC HA-S400. Affordable Carbon Nanotube cans for the masses.
How do these or S500 (or S680) compare to Philips Downtowns? After few years the cord of the latter broke inside the joint between the headband and the right element so I'm looking for a new portable pair. I kinda liked Downtowns, the mids were a bit too underwhelming but all-around they were...- SonicScientist
