Chasing the Frolic — Uncovering The Roots Of American Music

Super awesome... buying this album for sure! Reminds of the music I liked watching Deadwood, Hell on Wheels etc... Thanks!

    A strange request.

I gotta say, stick with AKG.   IMO none are more reference and clinical than the K271-MKII http://www.amazon.com/AKG-K271MKII-Closed-Circumaural-Headphones/dp/B0016MOC28/ref=pd_cp_e_0   However, for a more gentler reference class, with a fabulous soundstage.. I highly recommend the AKG...

    Bowers & Wilkins P5 Impressions

I posted this on Tyll's InnerFidelity blog as well, but maybe more people will find it useful finding it here.   I do like the phones, they are comfortable after break in. Keep in mind that initially the headband along with soft earpads allow to feel a bit tight on the fit and will not be...

Reply to review by 'helluvapixel' on item 'Schiit Valhalla'

Destroysall, The HD598 is quite revealing and laid back. Depending how you like your metal to sound it may not be what you're after. The bass is tight, but lean and smooth throughout. If you want more kick to your bass and more dynamic listening then I would highly recommend instead the...

Disappointing... obviously not selling well to go that low. Unless you are into artifically boosted bass. I was initially impressed by Monster Turbines but the bass and mid range are muddy. Funny though, 62% claimed in seconds.

I have a pair of white Crossfades and knowing now what they are like, I wouldn't buy them for $75. Very flat tone, midranged bass boost and cut off highs. Very specific music genre for sure.

Does a DAC make a giant difference?

@baglunch,   This quote is by far the best analogy I've read to make it dead simple to people why certain components are needed. Nicely written.   Quote:

Beware, the futurshop.ca site is super slow and full of problems. I don't even know if my purchase went through. I might try later. Some items are still not showing up %50 off.

@yd2zhang : thanks for the heads up. Nice that we get enough time to browse before buying, so I will have to wait until tomorrow to order.   I'm actually considering the RS170 for the office, the uncompressed digital over air transmission would be sweet, and then I could take my DT770 home...

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.

For comparison sake, here's Peach Tree's Dac-it. Some one mentioned galvanic isolation and they have it, and you'll see it has USB and the price point looks coincidentally very similar ;) $449 US.   http://www.pearlaudiovideo.com/blog/peachtree-audio-dacit-dac/

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

Quote: We use digital outs from a digital source like CD player/transport, or iPod so that you can use a fancy DAC of your liking to make the analog signal your amp needs. Because the PURE has a DAC you can take the analog output to your Little Dot. However, the PURE outputs a bypass...

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

Quote: Analog is analog, digital is digial. Once you use an analog output it can't be transmitted digitally. However, whether you use optical or coax is preference imo considering it's 1's and 0's but if you do the coax route you'll want to use a 75Ohm cable for cleanest results. I prefer...

I am going to confirm that using an iPhone 3GS has no volume control (on analog output). To date I've been using a 160GB iPod Classic (volume control on analog and digital output).

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=47597&view=findpost&p=422892   I found this post interesting. A bit subjective but possibly in the truest sense there is 'some' change to the bits but whether it adversely affects audio..... anyways I sent PURE an email to see what...

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

Quote: You can control volume on the digital out. From what I read elsewhere your best bet is to ensure the volume is 100%.   However, because you are still sending the same musical bits is adjusting the volume, hence a line level adjustment, really altering the digital sound you'd...

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.

No hints that I know of. If I was to guess, $300-$500 to be inline with Asgard to Lyr. Knowing them, it'll be something crazy like $250. hehehe (I doubt).

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

Quote: it reads a line signal. so your system knows what 'volume level' the bits get convert to audio should play. Everything will require a line level. That's why some DACs sound better with some amps because they have  high line level etc. The bits are intact, there's just a line...

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

Quote: David,   The volume can be controlled by remote or the iPod/iPhone depending on its generation. The signal is not processed, it's simply a line level signal for the DAC to interpret. I find it somewhat useful to have the volume control. But there isn't a quality loss, just a...

    Pure i-20 iPod/iPhone Dock as a DAC

BmWr75,   I was simply quoting a literature diagram that Wadia has, and they labeled it a 16bit DAC for whatever reason. Sorry this caused confusion. What is interesting is Wadia has RCA audio out. So it will bypass it's digital extraction I guess and line-out from the iPod/iPhone.
