IMO, to be honest you cant compare a sub $100 iem with a x5 price iem. IE8 alot better than hippo vb in bass and IE8 have fantastic soundstage. i own a hippo vb, I had the same problem like you when i was picking an iem in between this two. If gv me choose again, definitely i will go for IE8...

got a clip+ last week, I listen to clip+ every morning when i travel to work and hoping it will sound better. but im disappointed with the bass because clip+ kill my hippo vb sub-bass bad iem to pair with clip+?

The only thing i like my hippo vb is the sub-bass that I cant find it with my atrio. Soundstage, clarity, details, music separation of hippo vb can never compareable with IE8. They are just mediocre. But for the price, hippo vb is a very good deal.
