Hey guys, i downloaded an app on my iphone 4 called decibel 10th and used it to measure how loud i listen to music normally.

Im not sure if its correct but i just put the tip of my iem onto the lower mic of the iphone (left grille) and its measurements fluctuated from 63db to 100db averaging 92db. It was a movie score btw.

Normal pop songs measured 87-96 db .

Is this too loud? or is the thing flawed? my room with the fan at medium speed measures 55-62db .

Some resources.

Of course the app and the mic on the smartphone aren't going to be that accurate but it gets you in a ballpark. Also, if you aren't right over the mic the measurement will be lower. If you're really concerned get a proper spl meter and make a seal around the IEM nozzle to the spl level meter to take your measurements.

Movie scores fluctuate more than pop songs. 87-96 dB is a little bit high for long term listening (8 hrs listening within a 24 hr period), but for 1-2 hours it should be ok.

I dont even get that long to listen every session. I usually listen for 10-40 mins a session. so it shouldnt be a problem.

I am now a quieter listener that what I was. I get the same enjoyment as I always did, I've simply trained myself to be smarter with my listening environment.

My average listening with IEMs (proper SPL meter) is around 70-75 dB.  In a very quiet environment, it's often 5-10 dB lower than that.  At 80-85 dB it's tolerable but too loud, and my tinnitus will play up.  Sustained at 92 dB I'd be causing serious damage.

If the measurements are real, and this is an IEM (sealed in your ear), then yes - it is too loud.
