SINGERS WITH UNIQUE, ODD AND UNUSUAL VOICES

Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners: can't describe his voice in words -- thick, nasal, craggy, an old, stern-faced uncle with a clownish nature. Spanish piper Carlos Nunez, when doing a song about the exploits of Captain Nemo of Jules Verne's fame, picked Drew for the voice of Captain Nemo -- and he couldn't have done better!

A lot (too many to name) of these artists don't belong here...

Anyway, I'm awfully shocked nobody has mentioned Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) yet. I don't think I saw Louis Armstrong either!

Then there's:

Howlin' Wolf - Similar to Captain Beefheart
Mike Patton - Just an unbelievable vocalist
Yamatsuka Eye - Just an unbelievable vocalist

Han Bennink - Boy can he yell

Frank Zappa - So odd and quirky.. especially during "Titties & Beer"
Jandek - Out of tune, really loud, and wild!
Bob Dylan - This one's obvious
Todd Rundgren - Strange vocal range cut-offs
Don Redman - Strange, stuffy voice, yet pleasant
Jolie Holland - A beautiful voice but strangely thick

DEFINETLY Rowan London! His voice is one of the most unique voices I have ever heard. Actually not only the voice, but also the way he uses it. Almost unlimited vocal range and the way his voice is totally filled with melancholy and despair.

Also Dani Filth on Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace. His vocals are just some average shrieking/growling on other CoF albums, but HOW did he manage to get such a sound on Dusk is beyond my understanding. I mean, that sound is just not human. Goes from deepest growls to amazingly high raven-like sound. Normally if someone tries to "growl" from such high notes, his voice would sound very thin and raspy, and wear out in a second. Not in Dani's case...

I can't believe nobody mentioned Wesley Willis.
