I'm not huge into IEMs or portable headphones for that matter, I'm rather happy with an $80-$120 pair I can beat up and not worry too much, without sacrificing on sound quality. I had a pair of Apple Dual Driver IEMs which were pleasant to the ears and held up amazingly through my 8 mile bike rides every day and 2 mile runs after. I was astonished at this to be completely honest. When they finally broke, due to an animal chewing them, I decided to do some research for the price range and I came across the RE0. High recommended for their clarity and similar sound to the Ad700, which I love. When they arrived I tried them and instantly disliked the sound. That's expected as I was used to the sound of one IEM and switched to another, no big deal. I listened for hours and still never fell in love with them, the bass was just not enough, but it was there enough to tease me wanting more, which is funny since the Ad700 are anemic in the bass department. I felt they were too analytical and I was dissecting my music, so I never fell in love with them.
Then the build quality hit me, man do I hate the casing. Whoever thought to put ridges on any part of a headphone that will come into contact with the persons skin should be fired, and I'm not the only one who thinks this. The ridges irritated my ears on runs and rides to the point where I didn't even want to listen to music anymore. The cable also seemed rather fragile and cheap on top of things. Time goes on, with minimal use, and finally they broke, the casing opened up today while switching tips. Now let me explain, they've been sitting in a room of 70 F roughly for 2 months untouched, and the glue somehow gives way and they pull apart. Now I know I can super glue them back, but this is horrible. I've never had this happen to me, especially with IEMs I've treated good/barely used.
Needless to say I will never recommend these to anyone. The sound was mediocre for me at best, but the build quality just threw away any chances of me every recommending them, even to someone who likes the sound signature. I've e-mailed Head-Direct and am waiting to hear, but I have a feeling I'm going to get the shaft since I don't have proof of purchase anymore.
