Sherwood
Headphoneus Supremus
Friends, quick update. Mrs. Sherwood returns from her trip tomorrow, so I'll post some glamour shots up tomorrow evening. Until then, I just can't take these things out of my ears. Within two minutes I completely forget I have anything in at all, and I'm lost in music. I can't profess to have immense experience in the world of high end IEMs, as I avoided them like the plague for many years. I owned a number of sub-$200 universals, and the Westone 3 for a time, which I enjoyed listening to but not wearing. That has all changed.
For so many reasons, these might be the best headphones ever made. Straight out of my iPhone they're immersive, lifelike, and transporting. Out of the big rig, they are clarity itself. I feel like I can hear 10 feet deeper in every recording, like I can see the walls behind the performers. It's surreal, but it's not a hi-fi trick in the slightest. Actually, surreal is a terrible word -- it's hyper-real. It's more real than my K1000s, more real than the O2s, and more real than the HD800. It's not better than all those, necessarily, but they are all obviously headphones. The JH13 are not headphones, it seems. They are the absolute closest I have ever come to the proverbial "plug the coax cable into your brainstem" sound.
I always thought I would hate that sound, as it would invalidate all of the listening to equipment I have so enjoyed over the years, but I do not. It's refreshing and honest, and thoroughly amazing.
These things are hands-down awesome. I'm going to standardize some methods, dust off my small-n quant. skillz, and write you all the proper review you deserve, but until then rest assured that these headphones are worth it -- every penny of it.
