That is what I was thinking , incomparable

.

Of course you can. Pudu is right. For instance, you can compare:

1. DX100-coax out-db2-Pico Slim
2. DX100-line out-Pico Slim

You can then compare the differences between the two DACs.

May you please elaborate.

1) the DX100 is merely a transport & using the DB2's DAC
2) the DX100 is the transport & the DAC

So it's basically comparing the DX100's ESS9018 vs DB2's Dual WM8740 +CS8416 +TAS1020B.

Huh?? The DX100 has a line out separate from the headphone jack doesn't it?? I don't think that's double amping.

Whats interesting about the line out is you can change the volume output on it as well. I've never really saw this before and makes me wonder, is it a true line out?

Having both the Fostex HP-P1 and iBasso DB2 with the DX100 coming in I plan on comparing three DACs.  I guess I would be using the RSA SR-71B as my amp for this comparison probably in balanced mode.

One of life's mysteries!
Can someone confirm or bust this or I have to call the "Myth Busters".

Yes as the volume control is in the digital domain and you are bypassing the amplification stage.

Hmmm...I wonder if it's behaving like the Benchmark DAC1 or Lavry DA11 whereby even if used in DAC mode there's a variable output. Usually though the user manual would have guidelines on what "volume" to set when used in such a mode.

The line out and the headphone amp both seem to have a fixed output, then they use the digital volume control built into the Sabre DAC.  There's no resistive volume control in there, it's done digitally.  The line out does not use the gain switch's setting.  Perhaps the line out feeds directly off the DAC, who knows.  Another question for iBasso perhaps?
