Brand New : Tralucent Audio Ref.1 Too & original Ref.1

Today was a GOOD day, as my Ref.1 and DAC/Amp One safely arrived (after first being returned due the DAC/Amp lithium battery being a no-no) Initial impressions using my DX100 and Tera-Player confirm my decision to purchase the Ref.1.

Packaging is nicely done with a good assortment of tips, adapter cables and carry cases. The phones themselves are beautifully finished and resemble fine jewelry.

I quickly found a set of tips that provide a secure seal and a very comfortable fit. Now, on to the sound....

The soundstage is expansive, and does give the impression of being in front of me, rather than centered between my ears. Instrument placement is very precise in both width and depth. I would not call the SQ analytical or warm/thick. It just sounds effortless and natural. Highs are clear and transparent but never sibilant. Bass is bottomless but does not intrude in places where it does not belong.

Overall, I get the impression of a quality speaker system with a well-implemented subwoofer. Despite this being the most expensive headphones that I have owned, I am happy that I pulled the trigger, as I suspect that the Ref.1 will keep me satisfied for a LONG time!! It is also time to thin out my collection of IEM's as I doubt that many will no longer see much use.

I have not yet paired the Ref.1 with the DAC/Amp One, since it is still charging. As it was shipped with no battery, I am using the lithium 9v from my T1.

Addendum: My DAC/Amp One is now fully charged and I can say without reservation that the synergy between the Amp One and Ref.1 is superb. Maybe it isn't the most expensive amp that one can choose to pair with the Ref.1, but its not likely that one could tell that from the sound!

Would you share a few pictures of dac/amp one? Also what are the connectivity options out there? Inputs and outputs I mean.

HERE is the DAC/Amp One thread started by H2OFidelity. There are very good pictures posted as well as my impressions from this morning.

The DAC/Amp is quite versatile, having USB and Optical inputs on the back. The USB output (decoded throughput) shares the Optical input receptacle on the back. The analog input is on the front, next to the headphone output.

About the only possibility missing is a Coax input, but given that the Optical input is likely to be of more use, I doubt that many will consider this a negative.

While the list of contents mentions a driver disk, none was found in my box, nor was one needed as my Linux computer recognized the DAC/Amp immediately upon plugging in the USB cable and turning on the amp.

I must say that it is an excellent pairing with the Ref.1 as one would expect.

Well, I don't have anything really comparable to compare to, as my next closest IEM would probably be my Flat4-Kaede. It doesn't have the low-end impact and soundstage and the highs are more emphasized that those of the Ref.1. Probably the closest competitor for my music preferences would be my Final Audio PF-IX. It is not, however, an all-arounder as it is very genre-specific and fit can be problematic for many individuals.

Unfortunately, I have never heard the 1+2, TG334, SE-5 or other highly-regarded IEM's in this price range, so I can't make any direct comparisons.

I can say for sure that I am very pleased with the out-of-the box performance of the Ref.1 and Gavin stated to me that the sound will coninue to improve upwards of 250 hours. I guess what I like most is the fact that no particular part of the audio spectrum is over-emphasized. This is an very well-balanced phone regardless of what you throw at it. I tried them with some old low-bitrate rips and even they sounded better than ever.

The Ref 1 OTOH may not necessarily be the #1 in vocal jazz, it's at least in the top 5 (in my books of all the IEMs I've experienced at least)

Hi Anak,

Do you mind sharing your list of top 5 as mentioned above?

No worries Anak.  I'm jubilantly enjoying my music via the Ref.1.  No intention for another IEM, for now.

Cheers
